ie, "Goddess, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

Of course it is acceptable. If that particular group doesn't like it then you can always go out and locate another group. It's NOT about Religion, it's about healing yourself and using whichever higher power leads you to sobriety. An AA meeting should NOT be about brining one to someone's concept of Deity, it should and MUST be about bringing a person to deal with his/her inner monsters. Whatever Spiritual power that enables that to occur is what that person should use.

Tim2honrgod. Who cares if it IS rewriting a prayer. Prayers are rewritten ALL the time. What exactly IS a prayer anyway? It's some form of dialog with Deity, it doesn't need to follow a specific woprd structure to be a valid prayer. As for Dishonoring God. To a Wiccan, that is irrelevant. To force a Wiccan to pray to the God of Chrisitianity is Dishonoring Goddess. In OUR Faith THAT is unaceptable, as unacceptable as Dishonoring YOUR god is to YOU. So stop tossing out your jingoisms and FACE it, Christianity is NOT the ONLY Religion in existence. Now GROW up, will you?

Probably not. It should be though because the say the higher power as we understand him or her in sn some cases.

My experience with AA was very bad. I was Christian at the time, but was not faithful as I was going through a divorce. the god of AA is not the Christian God and is far from being a Christian program. they claim that god to you cn be a doorkonb, so it would seem that the Goddesse would be just fine. But I hear they get all upset over pagans and Wiccans. I upset them because I had the spiritual side of AA forced on me so I started going back to church and my sponser ran me off telling me to never come back unless I was ready to dump church and go AA all the way.

If you were not court mandated then you would probably feel better in Wicca or pagan 12 steps, but you may have to start one. If you are court mandated as many are, then go, get your slip signed and if you want to say the Goddess do so. They can't throw you out if the courts sent you there.

My sponsor ran me off and that was over 15 years ago and I have not been back, I did relapse but got sobor without AA and have stayed sobor 15 years now, my motivation was I was going to do this myself to prove those guys wrong. and I did.

They say you can take what you can use and reject the rest, but that is a lie in my experience and I co own a yahoo group made up of people who have been burned by AA and I see others with similar experiences. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/without_aa/

AA is a religion with their own concept of god which is neither Christian, jewish or pagan.

If the Goddess is your Higher Power, and if they actually mean what they say about finding YOUR higher power, I don't see how they could have a problem with it. Of course, if they're prejudiced, it could be an entirely different story.

Of course it is... whatever inspires your heart and mind towards healing is definitely acceptable.

In Hinduism, Shiva comes in a dual gendered form - symbolising in the eyes of Divinity, male or female, both are equally important in the search for supreme peace.

In Chinese Buddhism, the Buddha of Compassion appears in both male and female forms

In Christianity, one of God's names is El-Shaddai or the Many Breasted One - symbolising him being a good nurturing mother to the people. It safe to say, in God... gender is moot

Why not? Pray to whom you believe in and what's going to work for you!

A friend of mine who is Wiccan had to go to AA meetings because she got a DUI (because she only weighs 100 pounds and had a beer before she drove home). They were very adamant on trying to make her Christian, which just made her mad.

If you make it so it works for you, then it won't be a waste of your time.

as a recovering alcoholic of is 9 years and a male, it has always been my philosophy that your Higher Power can be anything that you draw strength from. If 'Goddess' is what you draw strength from in your journey to be sober, then so be it.

Acceptable? Who cares?

If recovery is about surrendering to YOUR "Higher Power" and yours is Goddess, to heck with them if they can't handle it.

Sobriety is NOT about other people or their expectations or judgments or their religious bigotry.

Why not? I'm sure the majority of the people would shun you afterwords. Not too many people are open minded and spiritually educated. If you feel gutsy, go ahead, if not, then just say it to yourself.

It's your recovery.
Say anything you want.
Of course, then you'll have to deal with God.
