I've had two cockatoos for many years as well as other smaller species. My other species have all picked up more speech then the too's.
Cockatoos are rather known for their lack of interest in mimicing human speech, although there are certainly individual exceptions.

Whereas Amazons are major chatterboxes, Cockatoos are not generally considered or known to be great talkers - they are the cuddle-bums of the parrot world. I wouldn't expect too much speech out of your cockatoo but there are always exceptions to the rule.

Just as different people have different interests, so do birds; so just learn to love each one for their unique qualities. I have two Goffin cockatoos which have been with more for nearly 20 years. The hen used to say "Hi Mom", when I first got her and after I brought her home a boyfriend (about year after I got her) she quit saying that and now they both just love to cuddle with me and scream in their own cockatoo way.

My birds that do talk are my male Plumhead parakeet, my Indian Ringneck, and my Maximillian Pionus. I also have a female Derbyan parakeet that talks when she thinks no one is listening - but no other times.
