i'm a 16 year old U.S. citizen and some friends want me to go to canada with them. i have a driver's license, birth certificate, etc...i also have a passport because i went to Australia 4 months ago, so would that work? we're driving and there are no parents going, but my brother who is 21 is coming. do we need a parent or guardian? i'll be in the car with him but a few friends will be in another car which won't have anyone over 18 in it. can we tell the guards or whatever that they're with us, since my brother is of legal age? none of us have been up there before..and only my brother and i have passports..no one else does, so should they apply for one? anything else i should know?

we're going august 2nd and staying for 3 nights.

Americans driving across the boarder who are under 18, can get by with a drivers license, birth certificate and signed written permission from their parents with contact information and the travel details. Like that you (they) can travel across the border for the weekend in the custody of your brother.

Passports to drive aren't needed until sometime next year, but if you have it, bring it.

My daughter lives in Seattle and says you definitely need a passport now to get in and especially to get back into the US. You may have to alter your plans. The same is true for Mexico. It is easier to leave the US now than to get back in.

I know people who have been detained for some time from other countries that try to get back in after leaving.

You can call your local court house to find the definite answers to your questions but as far as I know you have to have a passport to come and go now. Security is tight.

Have fun if you do go. Canada is a wonderful place. Don't forget your passport.

You can get an expedited passport now but it takes a minimum of two weeks and costs an extra $60.00 on top of the usual fees for a rush order.

But don't try to venture across the border without first checking out the newest rules. What was fine a few months ago has most definitely changed. Before you even get in the car, check with the proper authorities. The people who issue passports in the courthouses and government agencies can answer you directly and with knowledge of what is advisable for travel to Canada from the US.

Passports are not rquired for land travel to Canada. However, minors under 18 MUST have a letter of permission from their parents to travel with another adult. The letter must be signed by both parents and notarized. See websites below.

They have delayed the requirement for a passport for awhile between US and Canada, so you are definitely fine. You can go without parents or guardians, just be able to tell the authorities where you are heading, and it is ok to tell them the other car is with your group. Be safe, stay in a group and have fun.

the only thing you will need is a note from your parents stating that they are aware that you are going across the border and with who.
Anyone over 18 will just need the standard id and drivers licence.
Enjoy your trip

Just a passport is fine now.
Or your birth certificates.
Passports are recommended though.
