We ARE evolving beyond religion, at a faster rate than ever before.
The whole of Western Europe is quickly becoming more atheist than religious (and better education, medicine, and humanitarianism has followed). Several countries also have overwhelming atheist populations for the first time in history.
Younger generations are abandoning religious dogma and supersticion at an astonishing rate.
And through education and science, we can speed it up even faster.
I give it 500 to 1000 more years until religion is practically extinct.
And lemme tell you, it can't possible come fast enough...

I may not answer your question here exactly, but I'd like to clear something up.
If anybody from the Christian faith is threatening you and/or being hateful towards you in any way, I'd like to make it clear that we are not all like that. The Bible talks about loving EVERYBODY, If a Christian is being hateful, they're making the rest of us look bad and giving people the totally wrong idea of what the faith is about.
That's something that bugs me to death. I've heard all kinds of horrible stories. "christians" going around with "Jesus hates *******" signs. I don't personally support the concept of homosexuality, but God loves everybody whether they have sinner or not. In fact, the whole reason jesus died is that all of us have sinner.
So, the Christians being judgmental and hateful are being te world's biggest hypocrites. Don't let them make you think that's what Christianity is about, because it's not.
I don't think man is gonna "outgrow" religion. My questions are when are some Christians gonna start actually following the word of God, and (this may offend you but) when are atheists gonna think about how if nobody created us, how can their be life?

Religion will never die. There are too many religions throughout all humanity, based on too diversified Godheads, that even if several were to die out ,the devotees to these dead religions would simply be absorbed into those which were left. After all, those type mentalities have a need to be led and would be scooped right up by the missionaries of the first of the remaining religions to find their "lost" souls and proclaim to be there to "save" them.

Some individuals have and do evolve beyond religion. But they are far a few between, no colective group. Religion has been around in many forms for a long time, it is probably going to remain in many forms for just as long into the future. Humanity is evolving technology wise, but our basic beliefs are still based on superstition.

It will when someone writes a sci-fi novel that gets a Nobel Peace Prize about all the fanatics and religious zealots and atheist zealots are all dead. It would be about the next global catastrophic event where only scientist that are prepared survive. ( alla 'Mad Max'). "The Age of Reason, 5012 a.d." ( are things really that bad?)

I believe that man is actually evolving INTO religion, rather than out of it. In the beginning, pagan rites and rituals were the norm, with blood sacrifice (Remember Mt Pele?), warfare using the lesser gods, etc. (Thinking gods were the forces of nature, etc.)
I wish someone would historically present the steps and ages of man's growth through his understanding of the world around him and how religious ideals evolved along side it.

Generations from now will laugh at how we are so lied to. Just like we consider the old religion of the Romans as myth.

Mankind is still in its intellectual and emotional childhood. I'm afraid it's going to be awhile before we can take the training wheels off. But we're making progress.

Religion has always been dead...only people who are filled with the Holy Spirit belong to the real church. The true Church is God's people, not a building and not an organization.
