I have a VERY busy mind. I have business ideas all the time. I am also a writer. When I express any ideas to my mom she always tells me why they wouldn't work and practically forces me to do something else to get my mind off of it. I am a single mom and am busy raising my kids so I dont talk to many other people about plans and ideas I have. I am really down about this. I have had a passion to start a business since I can remember but my mom talks me out of every idea I have. I have a good idea right now that other people are telling me I should do but she doesn't think I should. She is already trying to sway me away from it. I almost feel like not telling her anything anymore. I feel I always run in circles if I keep telling her my ideas. On the other hand, she is my mom and we have always been very close. Any advice?

If you're going to keep talking to your mom about these things then use her as a "worst case" person. She's the one telling you why things won't work out so take what she's seeing and find ways to overcome the problems. If you can overcome her problems then maybe you have a good business concept. If you can't you may want to pass on the idea and wait for a better one to come along.

You do kind of need that grounding advice as you don't want to spend a ton of start up money for a business and then find that you're in over your head.

Oh, and you do want to talk to other people too. Particulary those who are doing well in business. You also need their advice to make the plans you have work out. Just don't rely on only positive or only negative people.

Your seeking your mother's approval and your not gonna get it. She sounds like a fearful and negative person. Just because she thinks it won't work doesn't mean it won't.

Your different from her and have different views on things.

Stop talking to her about your ideas because you already know the response your gonna get, which depresses you. Keep talking to people that are supportive. She brings you down and makes you doubt yourself.

There may be a part of your mom that doesn't want you to be a business success...she may have low self-esteem or something. Maybe you should tell her that she's negative and unsupportive and ask her why?

Stop talking to your mom. Talk to the small business administration. They have people who can see the validity of your dream and help you put it into action. When you have it going, then tell her.
