Is religion without the renewing spirit of humor, like sex without excitement?
What say ye about someone who has memorized the 750,000 words in the King James Bible but lacks the ability to laugh or cry (mourn for someone else's trajedy)?

Yes.
1 Corin. 13:1-Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not LOVE, I have become as sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophesy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not LOVE, I am nothing. and though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not LOVE, IT PROFITS ME NOTHING.

Religion is replete with compassion as you well know. Having memorized so much verse and text from the bible must have been an incredible experience for you. I suppose too much to digest in a hurry, and most of it escapes you like an elusive tree limb on which you wish to have a good swing. Still I believe being as clever as you are - you do know how many bananas make up a dozen. I am truly sorry N.A.S.A. overlooked your acumen and selected another of your species for a space mission. I will pray for you in church on Sunday and will notify the THE MAN UPSTAIRS that you think you are as smart as he is. So brush up on your homework; and I sincerely hope ,but doubt unfortunately, you will score well. I expect you not show any knowledge at all. For you are truly The Missing Link. God bless.

Aloha Wayne,
Bobby seemed to have nailed this answer. Sorry it sounds like you're having a bad day. Just remember, "time spent laughing is time spent with the gods"
— Japanese proverb
"So many gods, so many creeds, so many paths that wind and wind, while just the art of being kind is all the sad world needs"
— Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Mankind needs to be more human and thus more humane. The more time we spend loving "God", the less time we have to love our fellow man. Joseph Lewis said: "Man's inhumanity to man will continue as long as man loves God more than he loves his fellow man."
"I am certain and have always stressed that the destination of mankind is to become more and more humane. The ideal of humanity has to be revived.
— Albert Schweitzer, (1875-1965)

Not every one has a sense of humor. I think they miss out on a lot in life...also not everyone mourns or reacts to tragedy in the same way..some are very vocal and some just keep to themselves and suffer in silence..takes all kinds to make up the world...don't judge too harshly.

Pssssst! When you speak with words of wisdom, and have a sense of humor, that can start some murmurs. Laughter is good medicine, and if I had a script pad of my own, I would prescribe it daily for everyone. I would, however, have to put someone in charge of mine, or I would probably exceed the recommended dosage. On the other hand, I think Rammy's loss brought us in one accord, whatever our faith of lack of faith. She is an example of agape love in all her words.

Religion itself is simply the practice of specific doctrines determined by mankind to be God's wishes for all.
I believe that a person needs to have a personal and ongoing relationship with God in order to know what He wants from them.
For me, God has lead me to believe that compassion for others is what He wishes as are good works. Not so much because we need them to be forgiven of our sins, but simply because those things are a sign of our serving God.

Actually, the book of James (which you quoted in your question) also has the answer, I think:
James 1:27
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

I think peeps in my corner call it "Holy Laughter". lol
God never meant to squelch or stifle any of our emotions, especially laughter. We are in fact, made in His image and likeness, with the full breadth of emotions and feelings. And He is quite the prankster, I must say. (I take after my Father, as I tell others ;^D)
"But thou, O LORD, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision." -- Psalm 59:8 KJV

Don't confuse "compassion" with "tolerance of any and all lifestyles, even if those lifestyles are sinful ones". They are not the same thing.
