I need a root canal and my dentist wants to put a crown over the tooth when he is done. My insurance does not cover a crown and it would cost me over 800 dollars. If I just get a filling in the tooth, how long will it lasts? Also, if the filling comes out can they put another on. I wanted to see if I could do this until I could afford the crown

I'd like to give a shout out to all my peeps in Southside, to the one that made all this possible (pointing up to heaven), and to my illegitimate lil sis in T'town.
You can't get a filling in a tooth that needs a root canal. (That's what Karen said). Gosh, are you a re-re? What I think you should do is go to Wal-Mart, go to the toy aisle, look for a little red egg that says Silly Putty, buy it, take it home, pinch off a little of it and shove it up in that damn tooth. Then with what's left you can roll it into a ball and it'll bounce, it will also pick up newsprint off comics. Since today is Sunday I know you have a newspaper so that means you've got comics. Oh, btw, say a prayer for me tonight since I'll be driving to work with no tail lights.
Whatcha eating for supper?
Whatcha gonna do for the rest of the night?
Ok, nice talking to ya biotch. (I made poor little Karen type so much.)
(Looking up) Hey mom.... this reminds me of The Brady Bunch.

I have root canals without crowns. They can last a long time depending on how well you treat your teeth.
So TELL your dentist, "No crown please."
It's your teeth and your money and he has no right to force you into purchasing expensive esthetics, especially if you've told him your situation.
Stick to your guns on this, the tooth will be fine until you gather the money for the crown.
If he still tries to convince you and you decide you do want a crown, make him work out a good payment plan for your budget.

I'd ask your dentist whether or not a filling is even possible. It's totally impossible to answer this question without being a dentist and seeing the tooth itself.

You could also get a second opinion at another dentist.

i think the best way is to get the money for the crown and then do the root canal. cause i had to get two root canals and i didnt get a crown for the first one cause i was low on budget and trust me on this.... get the money for the crown and then get the root canal.

and im not sure how filling will last.

if your dds has told you that a rct is needed than it would be wise to follow his/her advice..your tooth may have an infection or is in too bad of a shape that a single filling will probably do more harm than good..get the rct and ask your dds if it may be possible to make monthly payments on the crown..
