this depends on what kind of tv, plasma or LCD, how often you'll have a fire going, and what kind of ventilation you have in the room..... when you see tv's tucked into a 'hole in the wall' over a fireplace , there's usually a little fan, like the one in your computer tower, in there, moving the air around... the tv does create heat and it has to leave or it will damage the tv.... now, make a fire in the fireplace and heat up the chimney behind the tv AND have the tv ON, and there's way too much heat around an expensive bit of machinery!!!....

your best bet is to have a pro install the tv up there... getting the wires and cable hook up and DVD lines, and sound lines all hidden is a trick for a pro, too!.... be very careful to do it 'right' (professional installation) or you could also void your warranty on the tv!....

For comfort and look ,it is okay to place the tv above fireplace wall but when it comes to safety, it has never been a good idea as heat may damage the electronic parts and in case you are using a wooden fireplace ,its gonna disturb you in watching too due to its raising soots.

I'm seeing this done a lot in the new model homes. It's offered as an option. The latest one I've seen is recessed, is tiltable, and includes a screen that rolls down over the entire thing to appear as art when you don't want to see the TV screen. Everything is on remote.

They have done it on This Old House and on Hometime. I trust the PBS home improvement shows on remodeling and decorating ideas.
