virtualguy92107 has a good point. Organic material is usually closer to the surface.

If you need a guaranteed method to ensure there is no organic materials, simply bake it. It will require about 500 degrees, so it will take a hot fire or an oven on self cleaning. The heat will allow the carbon organic matter to oxidize (aka burn) leaving just the minerals.

Dig deeper. Frequently organic soils are just the top foot or two. Unless you are in a river bottom or flood plain, you should be able to dig deep enough to see a clear horizon between the top layer, which will be dark and contain plant roots, and the mineral soil (sand, gravel, decomposed granite, clay, etc) which will be a different texture and usually lighter color.

Soil IS organic material. That is what soil is made out of. If you removed all the organic material, you'd be left with a tiny pile of mineral dust.
