How can one really know if Dali's took drugs?. He was quoted as saying, on the one hand: "I don't do drugs. I am drugs"; "Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic." But also: "Everyone should eat hashish, but only once."

RE:
Did Salvador Dali ever do any kind of drugs?
I'm just wondering because his art is psychedelic.

Dali was a very gifted Artist. One of the main components of the Creative experience..is to SEE things in a whole different way. Look around you...an artist's "eye" will see wonders galore.Stimulants: Coffee,Alcohol, extreme joy can open doors to perception. Once viewed through these open doors/windows the world becomes larger & more detailed. He COULD have consumed mushrooms or another form of natural hallucinogen. Maybe

A lot of Dali's art was surrealism (based on his dreams)... so I think that explains why it is so "psychedelic".
I don't know if he did drugs... he was born in 1904 (died in 1989)... so he lived his prime years during the early/ mid 1900's... In my personal opinion, I doubt he was on drugs (as we think of drugs. There's no way he was on drugs like crack or ecstasy). If anything he drank a lot... as many artists do and did during that time.

Looking at his work I would say he probably did drugs....... Picasso helped himself to acid and absinthe, so Dali likely did, but who knows....he also was a surrealist and had a fantastic imagination....for a good understanding of him read a book called (and I think the title is a great pun besides) "Hello Dali"......remember though, Dali was very prone to "embellishing" his past, so take the book with a grain of salt.....happy reading!

Yes...but it has nothing to do with his paintings.
Drugs make you 'dream' nice but when it comes to making art from those experiences it will suck big time. Specially in 'the early years' he was known to experiment with all kinds of narcotics including (then and there) legal stuff like absinthe, alcohol, tobacco and coffee.
Just think about this: How would he have been able to paint like he did if he was under the influence? His attention span would just never would be long enough. Just between you and me...I believe that is the ONLY reason he did not use drugs. It prevented him from painting.
His large ego was his true drug.

i belive Dali once said he was drugs. and i think so also too.
haha, it looks like he was on a Acid trip huh?
no, he is a surrealist. not a psychedelic
he made his art way before LSd was made, i think it was made in the '40s by some swedish guy.
if you need an acid trip and have no acid, look at DALI and Ernst.
no, surrealism came about to get people's mid off of war, and they came up with juxtaposition, where two things that dont go together are painted together.
either way, dali and ernst are great.
buit it makes you wonder if they were tripping, but no
LSD came after the surrealist movement
maybe absinthe, who knows.

duuuude i looked him up and no he didnt do drugs and he lived a long time too he died at 84 or something. people that do drugs dont really live that long normally....thats different... he said he didnt do drugs he was drugs. and he started drawing as a kid. he was a genius he did so many things other than drawing. he was a surrealist and his imagination was so crazy... with an imagination like that and all the multi-tasking (all the things he did) w/o drugs he is a genius. he could get himself into this dreamstate? idk what word to use but he could envision things like a crazy trippy dream and then he would draw the picture remembering wat he envisioned in his mind. and he was obsessed with making money and i dont blame the druggie he needs to buy his drugs. he so damn cool
