How about the classic Disney's Mickey and Minnie Mouse. When I was pregnant we weren't sure if we were having a boy or girl, but knew either way the baby would have to share a room with their older sister. Anyway, we thought a room with Mickey on the part where the boys bed and stuff will be and Minnie for the part where the girls stuff will be, and of course the classic yellow background for the walls. Plus, these characters are popular for all ages, my husband still loves Mickey, and we have some Mickey nic-nacs around our house.

If you can afford it, you might want to try to invest in some modern technology things to install in the room. Go digital with a few learning items that are for both sexes and will grow with both children.
Make it like a play gym and maybe a small stage where they can play make believe acting, ballet and show their talents.
Use stuffed chairs for crawling and romping, peg boards for play and display, large rug on floor for games or race track from Lowes, use small table and chairs for coloring & legos.
Make different work stations & use multi colors for a bright and vibrant enviornment that kids respond to without overdoing the theme thing. Bright colors can just be accents by putting their name letters above their beds to show them they have their own spaces.
You can always buy the same comforters that have reversable sides to make the room section more different, but still uniform in color and theme, and set it off with simple curtains that are complimentary to the predominant color you have chosen for the room. Keep it simple,.... less cluttered junk toys and decorations for distractions, but functional for greatest impact for happy kids and safety.

My son's nursery is done in chocolate brown and taupe with light blue accents. He has a honey bee theme, but you wouldn't necissarly need to run with a theme. Chocolate brown looks so cute paired with light blue or light pink. If you were to have a boy, you could put light blue accents on his side of the room and light pink on hers. Think block letters with their names above their beds, or little bedside tables with pink or blue cloths. That way the ROOM is theirs, but the SPACE belong to either your daughter or your son.

We did clowns for our son. Green and yellow would fit into that theme.
