A reliable, convenient public transport system like they have in Europe. In N. America, public transit sucks big time! I used to take it to work and it took me 2 hours! Then I bought a car and it takes me 50minutes to get to work. Who in their right mind would continue to use transit, if they can afford a car (in my situation) ?

I live 4 miles from work so I could walk or ride my bike, but I haven't yet. The reason being that I have a lot to do after work and when I get home so I use my car to get my errands done quickly. When things cool off and I have nothing to do when I come home, then I will start riding my bike.
In 7 months I have poured another 20 feet on my driveway, built a 2 story shed from scratch, planted berry bushes, redone my front yard, painted the inside of my house and started to remodel my kitchen. I couldn't have done all this if I was burning daylight walking to work.

I would consider it if the nearest bus stop wasn't 8 miles from my home and if it didn't take an hour and a half and 3 transfers to get to my office, which is 15 miles from where I live. Don't tell me to walk it either, I live in Phoenix and it's been over 110 degrees here for the past 3 weeks.

Sure, i could take the bus 4 miles to work. I'm in a major Metro area.
Here's all I'd have to do:

Walk a block to catch the northbound bus.

Go 2 miles out of my way so I can wait 20 minutes to get an eastbound transfer.

Wait another 20 minutes for a southbound transfer.

After 65 minutes and $2.40 in bus fare, I'm at work.

If it's raining, I'm soaked. And, I have to repeat this in reverse to get home.

I could have driven myself in 6 minutes at a cost of $0.12/mile (in my pzev car...)

Sure, I'll take public transportation. Just as soon as it's practical for everybody to do so.

I agree with you about the environment
but I NEED my car, and often have 2, 3, 4 people in it, and often limited time, in a hurry, tight schedule, people depend on me to get around fast, employees, employer, clients, disabled person, family, friends,...I share the use of my car...many people benefit from me using my one car...The answer is making cars pollute less, with hydrogen fuel or hybrid fuel cells or something. Also, I'd love to car pool more if there was some safe system for driver and passengers who are going my way ... its upsetting to see so many cars with only one person in them, even during the traffic congestion in the New Orleans evacuation during hurricane Katrina...there would have been much more efficient evacuation if there was car-pooling or ride-sharing then..

hmm for my area it would take public transportation even being offered. and around here if construction entails removing a wetland area they have to replace it in another area as part of the project or they can not do it.

First, look up the blue e book value on the truck for inner maximum occasion revenues, then sell your truck to a private occasion. it incredibly is, if: you're particularly in simple terms utilizing the truck to get to/from artwork. you will save lots of money by no longer having a vehicle. Public transportation the place you reside is sturdy. in case you reside in a super city, sell that truck. in my view, i ultimately bought my first vehicle at age 30 because of the fact public transportation the place I stay isn't sturdy, nor handy (i understand, after having trusted it for 8 years). I artwork 3.5 miles from my domicile and motorbike while climate is stable, yet love having the vehicle while the climate isn't bikeable and while i ought to get groceries, bypass to human beings, and bypass the place i choose. i myself do in comparison to counting on others for rides! do no longer worry approximately "driving the bus like absolutely everyone else". walk to artwork, in case you could, and save on bus fare.

i live 20 miles from where i work and there is no public transportation that links my home to work, so i drive; HOWEVER, i'l be loosing my job in the next 2 weeks(laid off) so i wont need to drive anymore. that will save some on pollution.

They would have to pass some kind of standards of who gets to ride the bus. No alcoholic bums, white trash and other smelly dirty people smelling up the bus for us respectible folks.

I'll stay on my bike until then.

And BTW, driving does not kill the earth, driving with stupid fuels (like gasoline) does.
