Suppose you made a mistake or went over the top on an issue (by mistake, say). I respond to you by saying "Your parents are to blame for your irresponsible behavior - they should be caned". Will you tolerate my remark? It is free speech, though (at least according to the US constitution)

One of the Yahoo Answerers said that to me when I was explaining to him about my culture. I did not say anything offensive to him, nor went over the top. He defended himself by saying that it is free speech in America & that I should get used to it!

People say a lot of thing they would not normally say when they have the anonymity of the internet . I would probably react by busting his nose if we were face to face . In this case though , I think it would best to just ignore it .

In some societies the parents are held liable for their children's misbehavior. Had you said that to me I would have thought it harsh. I am responsible for my actions. To punish my parents would be too little, too late. Perhaps in the culture you were raised in parents are held in greater respect than here, and would still have influence over you. A problem in our society is that too many people want NO responsibility for their actions, adults or children. They seem to believe they can do what-ever they want with out consequences. It makes for an immature society.
As to free speech; it is our right to speak freely, how-ever the constitutions intent didn't include verbal abuse, intimidation, belittling or vulgarity as a special privilege. Just because you CAN say something doesn't mean it is appropriate or correct. A tip: learn how to express an opinion with-out the use of never, always, those people, and should.

They sound silly and uneducated, do not worry about it there are always going to be total losers around.
If someone said that on the net then I would just shrug it off and probably pity them, BUT if someone said this to my face it would be a whole other can of worms.
People will always say what they will and yes it is free speech but when you can't see who your remarks are aimed at then people tend to be alittle braver and ruder and more over the top then say if it was face to face communication.

First, my parents are not around to defend themselves and I would let you know that. Second, once we achieve adulthood we can blame no one but ourselves for irresponsible behavior. My mother was the child of an alcoholic, she went only to the 8th grade and was the most educated person I know. She would read encyclopedias for fun. There is free speech and there is defamation of character. Unless you have proof that my parents control me now, you have no room to speak.

Your right to free speech needs to be matched by your active ownership of responsibility for the consequences.

I would personally read a comment like that and think that the person writing it was an uneducated fool who couldn't come up with anything persuasive to convince me that my position on the topic was flawed so they attacked me on a personal level.

It is free speech according to the U.S. Constitution, but that doesn't mean that you have to "tolerate" it. The nice thing about free speech is that when someone says something you disagree with, or that you feel is rude, you can express your disagreement or your displeasure at his/her remarks.

If it were face to face then I might have to practice my own freedom of speech but over the Internet and especially here on YA were some many people intentionally say things to provoke others,I wouldn't give you the time of day.

I would be a little upset. Clearly this person has no idea what they are saying...just because you have the right to free speech does not give you person to "harass" a person. This person has no clue about how your parents raised and has no reason to say that

You can say anything you like. It's kind of a rude statement but I'd have to agree in some cases. However, people do overcome their environment all of the time.

Parents raise their kids, then get blamed when the kids do anything bad. Why don't parents get awards when their kids do well?

It certainly is within the rights of free speech. Just like I'm within my right if I disagree with you. Most of the time when people say rude things to me I just ignore them. There are more important things to spend my energy on.
