I live in an apartment and would like to get a small, quiet, preferably non shedding dog. I have 2 kids(4 and 16 mos) so it has to be a dog good for kids.

If you can provide the exercise and your distance from the ground floor will not interfere with housebreaking then any of the dogs you want will work. People say huskies, pointers, etc are poor apartment dogs. This is because these people assume you will fail to provide consistent training and exercise, and fail to realize these breeds DO NOT SELF EXERCISE as they simply have too much energy and no matter what size your house and yard, it will never, ever be enough. Get the high energy jogging and biking partner you want, provided it isn't restricted by property management or insurance. If you jog 8+ miles a day a husky will be JUST FINE. I kept huskies in a 300 square foot apartment and also dogsat a friend's belgian malinois for several weeks. The dogs were fine, as they got an 8 mile bike ride or two every day. [Add] Look at this. Just look at these answers. These people have some sort of serious logical disconnect going on. It's like they think if you live in an apartment you cannot possibly be an active person capable of providing ample exercise. You've owned a German Shorthaired Pointer, you know how much exercise they need. So can you realistically provide that where you live now? If so, get another one.

Most all small dogs are not great with kids, they all have major attitudes when it comes to it. I know I have 2 small dogs. But if your looking for a great appartment dog, a Great Dane is perfect. Yes, they are huge. I have a Great Dane puppy, he is almost 8 months and weighs probably around 85 or 90lbs I believe and goes through a 34lb (believe that is how much) bag of large breed puppy food every 2-3 weeks. Great Danes are very lazy dogs and GREAT with kids- I have 7 nephews and nieces and he is great with them, plays with them all the time.

I hoped I helped a little. Good luck on finding the right dog!

I live in an apartment and have a miniature dachshund. She's a great apartment dog! She barks, but not constantly, only when excited or as a warning. She's great with our neighbor kids, and doesn't shed that much (just about every pet will shed).
Other good breeds to consider are the yorkie (although I've heard they are very temperamental), and chihuahua.

Most small breeds have been bred to live in apartment style settings. Many people have already suggested the common breeds: yorkies, maltese, mini poodle, dachshunds, etc.

The one qualm about small breeds is that they have been overbred because of their popularities. Whichever breed you decide on the best piece of advice is to go to a responsible breeder instead of a pet store or breeder who doesn't know what he's doing. Small dogs have been linked to questionable temperaments because of the poor breeding, so you will want to have a long talk with the breeders about whether or not they think their pups will be good with your children.

Hope this helps!

I know you probably don't want to hear this answer, but a poodle is a good choice. They don't shed (not much if they do) and are playful. They're non-aggressive and most are very quiet. Try for a young puppy or an adult that's been around many kids. They're used to or can be trained to deal with the hair/ear pulling! Good luck!

This is a website with mostly small breed dogs that are good with children in the way that they are sturdy and playful and friendly towards people. I will warn you though, pugs shed a lot, and miniature schnauzers can be on the hyperactive side quite often. Miniature poodles, (not the toy breeds), are relatively non-shedding, and are smart and playful animals, but you will need to have their coat clipped every 6 weeks.

Puppylover is misinformed on 2 counts.

A). Poodles DO shed, but their shedded undercoat gets caught up in their curly overcoat, causing matting, which is why they need to be groomed.

B). Poodles come in NINE colors, not 3. Black, White, Brown, Cafe-Au-Lait, Silver, Blue, Red, Apricot, and Cream. And contrary to popular belief, "parti" and "brindle" poodles are NOT recognized as a color by the AKC.

As far as a breed, most breeds will adapt to an apartment. However, I don't reccomend any Herding breed.

A standard or mini poodle, they dont shed. Minis are better for apartments. They both need some good training like all dogs but they are good if you dont want shedding another is a yorki they dont shed and are good with allergies. They have hair close to humans, They just reqire alot of grooming. But maybe you can teach you kids to start caring for something??? Good luck

I have a maltese that would make a great apartment family member. He rarely barks, loves to play with my grandchildren. I keep his hair cut short, as the hair can be high maintenance. Alot of them are around 10 pounds, so they arent real small for young kids to play with, nor very large.
