jemhasb missed the point of your question, as "god" was not a typo.

It's difficult to guess whether transmuting lead into a "noble metal" would have been seen as conjuring g/God or just a way to get rich. If not the latter, the pursuit was probably more akin to wanting to touch g/God than to make h/Him. Such making of g/God would have been too sacriligious to enter into such a spiritual endeavor.

That is one thing they tried to do.(Turn lead into gold not God). If they succeeded they would have a god they had created - powerful god i must say (NOT).
Others were mixing potions to control the thoughts and actions of others.
