It was a gift given to the early church to show that they had God's Spirit as the true church.
It was done away with, and those that think they are speaking in tongues today, when all they are doing is
speaking unintelligle gibberish, should take a serious look at what the Bible says about speaking in tongues and how what they are doing is not it.
(how's that for a run on sentence?)

I am pagan, Wicca is my religion. Pagans have used this in worship for thousands of years. There are a very few Christians who understand this and I will post a link to the one Christian group I know that understand this.

Here study these articles with an open bible and open mind http://www.bible.ca/tongues.htm
This should keep you very busy.

Heck tongues is not the first thing Christians borrowed from us pagans.

Edit:
n9wff has not studied 1 corinthians 14 very well. Verse9 Paul said So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. Hear Pauls words.

Verse 10 There are, it may be so lmany kinds of voices in the world and non of them is without significance.

!! Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian and he that speaketh shal be a barbarian to me.

Verse 12 Pauls say to see that which edifies the church tongues was not that. he said earlier that tongues edify the seaker.

It is a showy gift not really benificial unless someone understands it.

Read verse 14.

Verse 15 Paul say to pray and sing with understanding verse 19 Paul says that five words of understanding is more important and better than ten thousand word in a tongue no one understands. If tongues was approved by god why did Paul not know it?

Verse 22 Paul say that tongues are a sign for the unbeliever not for the believer.

How is that true if tongues are gubberish no one understands.?

I do and have found it to be a wonderful gift from the Lord! It is not demonic or of satan and those who say it is have bought into the doctorine of demons!!!
Those who do speak in tongues are not more spiritual than those who don't though some who do think they are.
It really does build one up and strengthen one's innerman. It also helps you hear God's voice with more clarity and it enables you to pray God's will perfectly. Does the church need it today? Absolutely!!! But those who have been given it must remember that it is a gift and shouldn't act like a spoiled kid at Christmas who brings it out to show it off. It is to build oneself up and to pray for others too.

I believe that it is a spiritual gift that is given when there is a need....the need would be that someone that speaks a different language needs to hear the gospel. And, yes, I believe it is given today. I personally know a pastor who went to a foreign country and did not speak the language except for a few words. Then all of a sudden he could speak it fluently and still can. He had evangelistic meetings there and is translating literature for them now.

There are many scriptures that talk about speaking in tongues, yes it is still a gift of the spirit...why would it be the only gift removed from the body of Christ? ..no one ever asks if other gifts of the spirit are still given today..as for Mr. A here are a few for you.....look them up ok.
1 Corinthians 13:1
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

Romans 8:26
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

1 Corinthians 14:14
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

Ephesians 6:18
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift that God gives people. He did in the Bible and still does it today.

Some people speak in tongues and others don't. It is not a requirement, but it is really awesome.

Read 1 Corinthians Ch. 12

Oh, and BTW I don't have a religion or denomination. I do have a personal relationship with Jesus.

Yes it is a gift still given to those who ask for it today.

The Apostle Paul told us that Gift could be speaking in the tongues of men or even angels. 1 Cor 13:1

And Paul told us that he wished everyone would: 1 Cor 14:5

Let me suggest you read First Corinthains chapters 12 and 13 and 14.

I'm non denominational, Bible believing.

Pastor Jack Hayford is probably the best teacher on this topic, who is currently on TV regularly.

I also teach on the subject, but I'm not on TV.

I totally and completely belive in speaking in tongues. On the other hand, I've seen it overused and used wrongly. I've seen people give a word and interpretation in tongues and be totally off the mark and I've seen people use it to gain stature in the church. But, I don't discount all the times I've seen it and have actually done it once myself. I definately belive in praying in tongues. It is biblical.

Romans 8:26-27 says, "Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And He searching the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. I would be considered non-denominational."

I could be considered non-denominational.

Denomination: "Believer in the Gospel Of Jesus Christ"

A CHRISTIANS BELIEF SHOULD BE THAT OF WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES..... THE VERY REASON WHY WE HAVE SO MANY DENOMINATIONS IS BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKE TO PICK AND CHOOSE WHAT PART OF THE BIBLE BEST FIT THEM....

THE SCRIPTURE CLEARLY STATES

1 corinthians 12:7-11

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

The scripture also says:

1 corinthians 13:1-3

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain nothing.

1 cor. 13:8-12

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

so you see the scripture clearly says that it is a gift and that it does exist today...however when christ returns...their will be no need for tongues anymore...seeing as they are a sign for unbelievers anyway!!!

1 cor. 14:22

Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand[h]comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, "God is really among you!"

speaking in tongues was a gift given to the apostles, it serve a purpose in that time when they were doing that but it wasn't passed down by them to others, it has no significance today because the apostles are not here today, i dont know why people think they can speak in tongues, it does no good for no one, the believer would not need it and the unbeliever would be turned away by it, if you read 1 Corinthians 12 it talks about it like playing a musical instrument if you dont know what note is being played how are you going to understand it, if there is no one to interpret it then how will you know what is being said!
