Yes, he will stop spraying once neutered. There will be nothing to spray and no desire for him to do it! And besides it is much healthier for cats.

If a tomcat is neutered after the age of around 6 months the procedure won't be 100% successful. The spraying won't be as bad as before and he probably won't be too excited about going outdoors. I've noticed this in my tomcat.

Don't stress over the FIV status, they live very long lives (like up to 15 years or so) with the disease. I have two, one has had it for 9 years, the other has had it for at least 7 and they're not showing any signs of it.

There's a couple of FIV lists over on yahoogroups, they're very good if you need info on FIV.

As for the spraying--the two FIV guys we have were both tom cats, we got them neutered and neither one sprayed in the house at all. The vet had said it takes a month to a month and a half for the testosterone to tone down, but our guys behaved themselves. One still sprays outside on the bushes, but he doesn't do it in here. I guess it depends on the cat.

We always spay and nueter our pets, but one of our males when he was 5 starting spraying again. He is 12 years old and has had to live outside for the last 7 because of the darn spraying.

Neutering definitely helps with the spraying, but I it will not totally eliminate the behavior.
