inheritance money. We received a portion of a (very small) inhertitance from a distant relative. We had absolutely NO MONEY, but no debt other than mortgage, so we thought, what the heck... it's found money why not get a couple toys for the kids. We got a swing set for the yard, and since I was homeschooling, we bought our first computer. a 386.... no internet. and it was 2nd hand.

My first computer. It was an IBM clone xt-86. It had 640k ram, a 20 meg hd (not gig), and an amber monitor. The clock speed was 8.5 megahertz. It cost $1300. My office software was First Choice.

Around 1984 or so....

It was a Radioshack/Sinclair 1000, in 1983. Had a 1K "memory cartridge" you could buy and add on to the "fully loaded" 512 byte system memory. You hooked it up to your TV. Storage was a cassette tape.

Outlay of cash? About $150.

What I got out of learning to program in Basic? Priceless.

Edit: looking at all of those other "next-gen" monsters, I guess I had the one made out of sticks and stones.

had a free one and was taking it to be fixed when I got in a car accident and it cracked the Mother Board (it's as close as we can figure out what happened) so I got a new computer for 1200 compliments of the insurance company.

Very first I bought was $400 for a 100 MHz processor.

I owned a Commodore 64 but my parents bought it and I have no clue how much they bought it for.

I am still considering buying a computer myself; I don't know what my current two computers cost. (My parents paid.)

I *intend* to pay anywhere from $700 to $2500. (Obviously, I need to narrow things down a bit more...lol)

Nothing, someone bought it for me.

It was an 8088 with 64k of main memory and a 5.25" floppy drive. Ms-Dos was disk loaded at boot up.

LOVE your neighbor as yourself.
Amen.
