Actually, as per your own link, the meaning of the word "Islam" is submission. It says it DERIVES from a word meaning peace. Do you know what derivation means? Here's a link, since you are fond of links:

http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/derive

Notice that when you go all the way back to the Latin roots from which we get the word "derive", part of the root means "stream". Now can you explain to me how the word "derive" relates to a stream? Pretty remote connection, isn't it?

I could list literally hundreds of other examples where the derivation of a word is pretty remote from it's actual meaning. I won't bother. Ask any Muslim, in any country, what "Islam" means, and they will tell you it means submission. And you know what? They are right. Specifically, it refers to the submission to the will of Allah (God). I am not even Muslim, and I know that.

(And just in case you are wondering, I won't bother linking it, but submission and freedom are two different things.)

Islam means submission and has the same root in Arabic as peace salaam. By their actions many who claim to be Muslim obviously don't make a connection as submission to the will of God for peace and the promotion of freedom and justice for all. Many of other religions also do not.

I'm confused...how did you know the people that answered the question were middle eastern? Just because they are Muslim doesn't mean they're from the middle east...

The word Islam means "submission", or the total surrender of oneself to God (Arabic: الله, Allāh). An adherent of Islam is known as a Muslim, meaning "one who submits (to God)".

Islam = Submission to the Will of God = Freedom from submission to creation.

Yes, Islam provides true freedom by bringing the creation into the worship of the One Creator and out of the worship of fellow creations...... including our own desires.

Islam is a state of being which irrespective of time or place.

Anyone from the time of Adam who believed in the One God and submitted to him was in a state of Islam.

Every Prophet was in a state of submission so they were "Muslim".

Every baby is born as a "Muslim" in submission to the Lord and following instinctual commands as per the system of God.

When they get older their enviornments will either keep them Muslim or they will adopt alternate beliefs.

I'm sorry. I don't believe your statement is correct. If you studied Arabic, you would know that words are derived from root letters. This is important because, the world Salam --> used for salutations means Peace. ISLAM, is derived from the same meaning as Salam. Which also means peace.

I highly doubt that Muslims in the Middle East who speak Arabic would not know the meaning of Islam.

And this is all semantics.
