I used to pain a lot a pewter and lead figures by Ral Partha. I collected anything dealing with dragons and knights, and these miniatures fit the bill. Loved it.

I used normal everyday brushes and would clip a majority of the bristles off, sometimes leaving just a few, or a single bristle for the smallest of features.

As for paint, i used a lot of testers modeling paint, they have almost any shade of any color.

I even went so far as to purchase grass and trees and had an entire landscape built.

This is a good site to start. I personally have good experience with my local game-shop where they have a special table where they allow people to gather and paint together. (beside the play tables where actual miniature battles are fought) They even have the occasional workshop.

It needs a hands on approach and chatting about it is a bit hard. :)
