There is not a problem using the ginger ale. See the recipe below. You do not have to add decorations, but I've included them just in case.

2 (12 ounce) cans ginger ale
1/2 cup lemon juice

Mix ginger ale with lemon juice.
Pour 2 1/2 cups of the mixture into a 1 quart ring.
Freeze.
Arrange desired decorations on top of the ice.
Slowly, pour remaining juice mixture over the top so that you don't disturb your decorations.
Freeze -- To unmold, run cold water over the bottom; it will then slip out.
Float in the top of your punch bowl for a very pretty presentation.

Decoration suggestions:.
Apricot halves.
mint leaves.
orange peel.
green grapes.
strawberries.

I think the ice ring would need to be in the freezer overnight, and I would lean towards the ginger ale as freezing best. If you haven't already thought about it, adding lime and lemon wedges to the ice ring would be really pretty :)

Neither, freezing will spoil them both.
Use water or fruit juice to make ice.
You can put berries in it for a nice touch.
