Hard to transport, hard to harvest, short season, high demand for fresh with a low supply.

I usually pick a gallon or so of black raspberries each season and make jam from them. Red Raspberries when I can find them also. I pick the wild stuff so it is free. However, mosquitoes, tics, spiders, chiggers, and thorns from the bushes make the work and finished product a labor of love.

I don't sell any of my stuff but friends and family will get 95 percent of the 80 or so jars of preserves a season. Getting the jars back is the hard part.

You can actually buys an 8 oz jar of jam for about what it costs me to make one. Homemade is just better.

All the reasons previously listed sound true. Why don't you try growing your own rasp. bushes? They are pretty easy to take care of & it doesn't take a large area to give you a huge harvest. I grow raspberries between my fence & garage in the back yard. Look for a type of cane that has no thorns. I was lucky enough to get some canes from my mother-in-law, they are fantastic. Just ate a huge container of them last night.

They bruise easily so they are harder and cost more money to transport. The Raspberry bushes are about 2' and are a bit hard to harvest Raspberries out of. They have pricks on them. If they arent Ripe enough they are too sour and no one buys them. They are also hard to manage/ grow.

Have you ever seen a raspberry bramble? You have to pick each berry off by hand. The bramble is prickly. Even if you don't do it yourself, you have to pay someone to do it

The government doesn't subsidize the farmers who grow fruits and vegetables. Instead, most subsidies go to grain farmers to produce food for farmed animals.
