Well, a lot of people oppose conscription at any time, they believe that if a cause is worthy that people will volunteer to fight. I'm assuming you mean 1916 in the U.S., people where very isolationist in those days and didn't want to get dragged into a war they felt was European business.

because America had no real business fighting in Europe and the majority back then, who were more literate than today's chickenhawks, understood this.

Woodrow Wilson was a liar who promised to keep US out of the war only to betray the people once elected.

Most Americans actually hated limeys since 1812 who always treated Americans with contempt as colonial untermenchen.
The yellow journalism of many British controlled press outlets began portraying the Germans as "dastardly Huns" (much as Muslims and Arabs are today) who ravaged occupied countries and sunk the Lusitania -even though it was obviously set up by pro-war forces to be sunk.

People don't like to get drafted. They'd usually rather decide what to do with their own lives than get that decided for them by total strangers. And the 13th Amendment to our Constitution outlaws "involuntary servitude" except as punishment for a crime. Since these victims were not convicted of anything it is understandable that they would resent having people force them to die. Not too hard to figure out.
