You have to sear it which requires a cold steak and a very hot grill. Make sure the steak is seasoned the way you want it and the grill is very hot. Drop the steak on the grill, letting it sear cook---then flip it over for the other side. Don't be afraid you will not make the steak too overdone or overcooked, it should sear in about 2-3 minutes then cook to desired tenderness.

You need a hot grill, cleaned & wiped with oil.
Lay steaks on the grill until first lines marked.
Grasp with tongs or flipper at near right corner.
Flip steak at 45 degree angle to the wires.
Next flip will be from bottom, at 90 degrees.
Last flip will be a repeat of the first one.
This will give you cross-hatch marks both sides.
Do not leave in any one position too long.
You want juices to go from red to pink for rare.

Make sure you know when to flip. Over flipping leads to multiple grill marks, not giving it a good look. If you're cooking chicken it will generally take 6-8 minutes per side. Beef (depending on the type) make take longer. Seafood cooks quickly (shrimp is about 2-3 minutes total). I would just look up cooking times online and make sure to only flip the once.

All answers are basically right. You do need a very hot grill and you have to rotate your steaks 45 degrees . The trick is to resist the urge to lift to check the marks. Make sure you have the heat right and let the fire do the magic. Good luck!

Easy! Get your grill to the right temp and oil it a little.
Put your steak down and cook it 1/4 done. Lift it up, rotate it 45º and cook it 1/4 more. Flip it and repeat.
Voila! Perfect grille marks!

Grill for 3 min on one side, then rotate the steak 45 or 90 degrees (depending if you want diamonds or squares) then after another 3 flip it and repeat.

Also, if you're buying a grill, it's much easier to get the grill marks you are talking about if you have thick cast iron grates. They are the best for searing because they hold the heat best and most evenly.

Basically make sure your grill is hot, place your food on it, let it cook, turn your food the opposite way from what you had it the first time, do the same for the other side.

EXTREMELY HOT GRILL ON HIGH FIRE AND THEN JUST DROP THE STEAK AND LET IT SHEAR FOR A MINUTE OR TWO BEFORE TURNING IT.
