I was providing care for a son of a military person. It didn't work out and I had to tell the parents I couldn't watch their son. It ended with the child out of control and the child broke our dvd player and our fan. Prior to the child starting, the parents and I signed a contract and it clearly states that if something were to break that was not an accident they are responsible. These people are being harrassing and I don't feel comfortable with speaking to them. Is it worth it to find out his commanding officer to have them replace the dvd player and fan? I know what he does in the military and what base he works at, but I wouldn't know how to find out his commanding officer. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Were you in the room when the child broke this stuff? Shouldn't you take some responsibility for 'watching' them and what happens while in your care?

I think the age of the child is something to consider, and I doubt the commanding officer would do anything - it's a civil matter - you would probably have to take them to small claims.-

You can find a main number for the base and there will be a base operator who can direct you. I urge you though to rethink your issues here. Is it really worth any more hassle to pursue replacement of the items when what it really comes down to is your word against theirs? Can you prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the child did it on purpuse? I believe this may be a situation where it may be in your best interest to just cut it loose and take the lose. If you pursue the issue then you are just inviting these people back into your life. Good luck, what ever you decide to do.

A new DVD can be had for $50 and a fan for $20. Under the difficult circumstances, sounds to me like you got off pretty cheaply, especially if you learned something from the experience. Let it go and move on. Why make a bad situation worse?

I don't know if you work, but if you did, how would you like it if some one tracked down your boss trying to get you into trouble. This infuriates me, civilians that have a bad run in with a soldier and immediately go and track down their chain of command. This is the guys career you're talking about here. Besides, going to his commander could only get him in trouble, it wouldn't get you your money back. If you want to get money for the stuff his kid broke, take him to small claims court, if its not worth going to court over, then don't worry about. Just leave his command out it.
