You need to take it to the mechanics. If it is a carburator, then the butterfly is stuck, the inside of the carburator is dirty, the gas filter needs changing, and a good tune-up is required. Also, after you get the car fixed, check the gasoline you are using. If you normally use supreme that has 92 octains or more then for an emergency change to regular with less octains, then this will damage the carburator. Also, the airfilter will need to be changed. It is all one whole system.
If it is fuel injection, then the injectors will have to be taken out and cleaned thoroughly.
When you fix the car and it begins running normal, do not accellerate or gun the engine while in idle, this can ruin the whole thing. Use only regular or supreme do not mix both. Always check and have the spark plugs changed. Right now your car must have the spark plugs sooty, burnt and rundown. Also the spark plug cables will have to be checked and a good chance they will need changing. Doing these simple things once in a while will prevent the car from losing power. The timing of the engine is part of this too, so take it to a mechanic and have then do all the work on it. Since it is a ford, they usualy have trouble I know I had Ford's before and I had to do more repairs in it than the Montecarlo that I had. Fords are a bit more harder and need maintanence. My dad's once was sputtering and when the ignition was off, it kept on rattling. At the shop, they put a tub on the exhaust and with succion, they unblocked the line which took a while. This is also included in the above repairs.

It is 14-15 years old, it is a Ford, worse of all, it is an escort (bottom of the line). Be thankful it has been running this long. Start looking for a new car...the ole Escort is well on its way to the junk yard!

i bet that sooner or later the car will start killing on you at stop lights etc. when this happens you need to go to a mechanic and tell him you need your tork converter unplugged to your transmission. anyway i believe that's what it is called. i have had 2 cars that did the same thing as your describing and then would kill and not keep running in gear. that's what my mechanic did to the transmission and everything was fine. with the converter unplugged you will not know any difference in how your transmission works although sooner or later the transmission will die. i wouldn't worry about that so as i put 20000 thousand miles on my first car before i had to junk it for a different reason and am still using my second.

Reset the ECU - disconnect the battery for 10 minutes - then go out for a good fast run. That may clear the problem - always works for me!
