I am trying to fix a cell that has a $/sq ft figure for a construction loan that is constant with a number of units that changes by column. What is the calculation to keep the $/sq ft constant while changing the cell value for the # of units?

you would have to use a 'sumif' formula which isn't all that difficult but a little complicated to explain but if you'd like to email the file id be happy to take a look and see if i can help

You need to create a mixed reference, i.e. the first part relative so that it flips over to change as you replicate it down or across, and the second part to be absolute so that it remains to the one cell only. Suggest you put the figure to remain constant in one cell, say, A1 and when you have created the function, click in the formula bar on that part of the formula and press the function key F4 to put the dollar signs in. This turns it into an absolute function so that as you replicate/autofill down the first part of the function flips over while the second part remains absolute to cell A1. Alternatively, name the cell, again, say A1 by clicking in cell so its the active one, then click in the name box which will save A1, overtype with a name, say, sqft, press enter. That cell is now renamed and when you use it in a function, no need to use the dollar signs to make it absolute, as a named cell is unique. Hope this helps.

I presume you are going to vary the square footage and then multiply the sq ft by the $ / sq ft constant.

Let's put the $ / sq ft numeric value in a cell near the top. Let's say it is in cell D1.

Now lets say in rows 2 and following, your sq ft number is in c2, c3, c4, etc. and you want the product of sq ft x $/sq ft in d2, d3, d4, etc.

In d2 enter the formula =c2*D$1. Now copy D2 cell in D3, D4, etc. The $ in the formula tells excel not to advance the row from 1 even though you copy the comand.

Enter the Formula '=' then go to the reference cell eg A1 then press F4 to make it an absolute ie fixed cell

Try using an array formula. It takes into account relative and absolute cell references without having to use specific F4 toggling.
