One of the main things that makes me lose focus is lack of sleep. So the first thing I'd suggest is make sure you get enough sleep at night, it should make your mind more alert at the very least.
Try to sit as close to the front of the class as you can. Not only will you be better focused, but if your mind starts to wander you'll always try and keep it under check because the teacher is right in front of you , happens with me all the time =D.
Try and stay away from your friends as well. Sometimes when you lose focus, having someone next to you as a distraction makes it even harder to get back on track.
Take a break if you just can't concentrate anymore. Leave the class and stretch your legs for a few minutes, or wash your face to wake up a bit. And of course participating definately helps keep your mind on things too.

Do you have a proper breakfast? It's proven that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and will help concentration. Make sure before you leave home have a substantial breakfast. Otherwise, make sure you sit at the front of the class, that way you won't have anyone in front of you to distract you. Also avoid sitting near windows. Good Luck :)

Focus on writing down what you feel are key words or phrases and then go over what you have written soon after to turn into notes. It may seem like a tedious step, but you willl have to concentrate on what is being said and write well to make any sense of the material.

Here's what I did:
Take crazy notes. Write down everything the teacher says.
As a private joke, keep a tally of every time they say "um" or some other silly word. I had a teacher that said "OOPST" with a "PST" sound at the end. It made me laugh to myself.

If you're really concerned about this, i'd suggest that you sit at the front of your class. It's harder to get away with sleeping in class, talking to friends, etc. Keep a drink handy. Keeping well-hydrated seems to help me out when i'm tired.

Take notes (as boring as it is) it's the only way to stay on track.

try volunteering as much as you can. it keeps you interested and focused. if that doesn't work the only thing you can do is have self-discipline.
