When making hotel reservations and answering the question of how many people will be staying in the room are you always truthful, or have you used a lower (dishonest) number in order to keep your rate lower?

Just wondering as this is a point of honesty I sometimes struggle with myself...

I can certainly see the temptation for people who are struggling financially, especially with kids, but I've never had to tell that particular lie, thankfully.

One thing to consider about it, is that in an emergency situation (e.g. a fire) the register may be used by the fire department to assess where they should direct their efforts.

If the motel/hotel staff say there are two people in your room and both are outside, it could lead to the injury or death of the unregistered person.

Also, if you do lie about the number of people, the unregistered guest may not be covered by insurance if anything does go wrong.

Hopefully that is not a situation anyone would have to face, but it is one reason hotels and motels keep registers.

Best wishes :-)

I have been dishonest in the past, because the room rate was going to be much higher, and they would not have let us all stay in the same room, there were 7 of us. four in the beds and three on the floor. What can I say we were a bunch of poor snowboarders, that didn't want to drive home cuz the powder was too good.

I kind of sit the fence. I'll tell them a lower number than are actually in the room, but I will only tell then a slightly smaller number than it true. Like if there are 5 people, I'll say 4, but I won't say 2.

At my age, I am honest. I want that double bed for myself when there are two double beds in the room. If I was younger, in college, I probably would fudge if I had girl friends with me. Quite honestly, I can't see the big different whether there are four in a room or five. The bed count stays the same. The towel count stays the same . . . . . no biggie.

I am guilty
I've said that I have 2 guests and need 2 double beds only to really have 4 people staying in the room

I do feel anonymous to be truthful. I do not answer questions which I consider too personal or would cause me to lie. I thought of this yesterday when a student asked a question that would have required my name, age, occupation, political affiliation, marital status and other information. I will not give any answers concerning family members, either. "Has anyone in your family ever caused you to cut off contact with them...?" "Do you know anyone who was abused..?" According to my spiritual beliefs, lying is not an option. Of course, I also tend to avoid the questions that are political and I generally stay away from religion and spirituality. I do not come to this site to harm others or to engage in rants or venting.

I have no reason not to tell the truth (and I want to make sure I get a room with plenty of beds and bath linens)
