Try this, hold down the alt key and while holding the alt key type 0169 on the keypad. (make sure number lock is ON)
ALT+0169 is usually the symbol but not always, anohter way to find it is
Goto Start menu, Click all programs, goto accesories, then System tools, In this menu find an icon called character map. in there you will find all the special charactes for the font set you are using. Find the © and clikc on it. at the bottom of the window you will see the © appear in a little text line, click the copy button then switch back to MS-word, and on the menu at the top of the ms word window click edit, then paste.

On my version of word, I usually go to the "Insert" tab at the top and choose "Symbol..." which takes me to a symbols database, where you can find just about any symbol you need.
Just use the scroll bar on the side of the popup database window to find the copyright sign... and any other symbol, for that matter. You might want to use the superscript feature, too.
