“Imagination abandoned by reason produces impossible monsters; united with her, she is the mother of the arts and the source of their wonders.” -Franciso Goya
What does this mean? Agree or disagree?

When you only use your imagination, it creates impossible monsters (things that can't really exist, imaginary). When imagination and reason are used together, art and all things beautiful are made. Agree for sure, you can't be all reason, and you can't be all imagination, you have to find a stable medium.

The mind without reason (common sense for today)is able to create anything. This uncontrolled imagination is the mother of what he seems to infer is true art and the foundation of true wonders.

But understand that this is a purely personal point of view of an extremely active and sometimes disturbed mind! Picasso said something similar and he fooled the world into thinking flat images of women with breast next to their noses and holes where the stomach should be was also art! These are minds closely related to Homer Simpson!

It basically means that if you have imagination but not reason (common sense), you'll have amazing ideas that can't work, but if you have both imagination and common sense together you'll end up with great things (art, beauty, etc)

I'd probably agree, because you do truly need both to actually make amazing things happen. Without reason, it's all imaginary, which is kind of true. It's like people who are dreamers but never make their dreams come true... that's imagination w/o reason.

Imagination runs rampant in people with delusions (such as paranoid schizos for an extreme example) but when a person who uses reason aka intelligence to work with imagination, a great story, invention, musical composition, or piece of art can be made. Imagination can be destructive if used by minds that are twisted.
