I'm 56 so I was at that cusp when conscription was stopped. However, I have been a teacher for many years, and I am all for conscription. I am also a keen observer of young society, and I still go for conscription. People of my age are intensely aware of lack of discipline, violence, boredom, lack of manners, pointless crime, living off the State, etc. But having said that, how do you get recruits? Will conscription EVER be reintroduced?

We would have no problem with recruitment for the British Army if certain stupid prats, mainly women, just kept their noses out.
The British Army have always traditionally recruited heavily in South Wales where there has always been an eager army of young men willing and able to go off and fight in a war somewhere.
The British Army have been told to cut back on recruitment in such areas as South Wales.
It's like this. I'm Welsh and as far as I can remember back, the men in my family did war thing. My Grandfater did both the Boer War and WW-One. My Dad did WW2. I joined up in 1957 aged 15 and came out in c1965 - no war but a lot of the usual.
As for National Service I'm not sure that the population of today would put up with it. So maybe no to that. Just let the British Army recruit from the usual places; from among the British Warrior classes, the Welsh, Scots and Irish etc.
Edit: I agree with the Yanks. I remember National Servicemen when I was in the BritArmy, they spent much of their time moaning and complaining. I would not trust them on either flank. No sir!

No. When I was in combat, I knew that the Marines to my left and right, and the one watching my back had volunteered to be there, and that made me feel a lot safer. The entire military establishment is, for the most part, against draftees. Yeah, you might occassionally hear some bull about making the dirty long haired hippie @$$wipes join up, but honestly, you don't really want them there.

The Russians used conscripts from Czech Republic, Ukraine, Slovakia, and all their States in their invasion into Afghanistan. That worked well for them now didn't it? Germans used conscripts at Normandy. Another bad move. You need answers to questions in the present- look to the past.
So no Conscripts in the US military.

no. the army has more recruits at present than are needed
no. conscription means having lots of unwilling, poor quality soldiers. makes more sense to have fewer but much more motivated and trained troops
no. because the army does not, and never has (even during conscription) accepted criminals. after all, if you know someone is a criminal, would you give him a machine gun? or a tank?

Conscription wouldn't work unfortually, but it would be nice to sort these idiots out.
It's down to lazy kids plenty of kids are signing up but they are too unfit and as much as the army needs Soldiers unfit soldiers are a liability...

I think National Service would do wonders for the country. However, we are not short of recruits. The biggest problem the forces face is RETENTION. Lots of people join, but when they realsie it's not like it is on the adverts they leave. People leaving the forces is what we need to worry about!

No modern forces no longer rely on cannon fodder and conscripts would be a burden on our highly professional forces.

God no, I like being able to know I can trust the guys to my left and my right. I think it would also weaken the integrity of our military, now we have an all volunteer force, if people join because they have to, the job won't be done as well.
