NEVER. Buy a 1/2-1 gallon glass jar (or use one from another source ... just WASH IT THOROUGHLY. Add 1/2 a container of PLAIN yogurt and make up POWDERED milk to fill the container. Set it into a 'warm' (still warm from baking something) oven and let it 'sit' in there overnight ... no heat on, of course. In the morning, you should have a whole jar of good yogurt ... save about 1/2 cup for the next jar, and ENJOY the rest ... I love to make mine and serve it with whatever the 'fresh fruit' in season is, or add a bit of sweetener (HONEY is wonderful) and vanilla, or even some leftover and 'reduced' coffee ... YUM!

I love my yogurt maker! I have a Girmi that I bought off of Amazon a few years ago. The only drawback is that it makes 7 jars and my son eats most of them before I get a chance to have any myself! You can easily replicate what the yogurt maker does by using a large glass container and a consistent low heat source. It just depends on your needs.

Here is my recipe:
1 quart skim milk
1/2 cup powdered non-fat dry milk
1/2 cup room temperature yogurt (usually saved from the previous batch)
1-2 tablespoons honey*

Put yogurt into a large measuring cup or glass container. Place skim milk, powdered milk and honey* in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring frequently to just below boiling point. Remove from the heat and cool until lukewarm (about 100 degrees).

Pre-warm the yogurt maker's heating base by plugging it in.

Add a small amount of milk mixture to yogurt to temper. Mix well. Add the rest of the milk mixture. Stir until well mixed. Pour into jars, secure lids and place in yogurt maker. Cover. Let process undisturbed and out of drafts for 4-10 hours. (normally 7-8 works for me). Yogurt should be partially set after processing and will thicken further after refrigeration. There will be a slight amount of liquid on the surface.

If you like to make yogurt at home, you do not need any machine to make the best yogurt, in 10 minute time you could make the best Yogurt, here is how...
Recipe: if you have yogurt at home all you need a small cup of natural plain yogurt as a starter, no flavored yogurt, for a starter best brand is COLOMBO if you dont have any Colombo brand around you, look for one that has a active anzime, try health stores, read labels most other brands have some kind of gelatine or corn starch and many other things that dont belong to be in a yogurt, if your starter it is nit with active enzime you will not achieve to make good yogurt... start with 1 quart of milk of your choice regular or fat free, best yogurt is made with regular milk and a little half an half mix with the milk, I know I know is fat in contrary if you have good active enzime in a yogurt that fat turns to a good nutrien, commercialy sold yogurds have thikeners or some kind of unnatural igridients, yogurt that contains gelatine or so on... the fat stays fat and that is bad, Ok, now that you have the facts on yogurt...
First simmer the milk and the half an half together on the stove on low fire, use a termometer, if you do not have one, milk has to be warmer that a body temperature, 102- 105 no more, ounce warm turn off the stove, in mean while prepair a very clean cups to poor the yogurt in, big one piece, or few small ones, your choice, must be very very clean, no presence of any type of bacteria at all, take the starter mix it with a little warm milk, mix it well till you dont have any chunks, ounce your mix is ready poor all the yogurt in the warm milk and mix again, like for 1 minute, poor the milk mix in your cups cover with a clean towellor any warm keeping clean stuff that you have best place is your oven to keep it worm for at less about 6-8 hours "do not move the cups after 1 hour rest " after 6-8 hours rest in a warm place remove towell you should be able to see if your yogurt made it should be hard to not shake it still soft inside, transfer to the refrigerator for few more hours, you have the best and natural yogurt you could find, for your next time keep a small portion for starter, by making few times you will master and become expert, I hope you like it. my family has been doing this for centuries....

I own the Cuisinart ice cream, yogurt maker and I would say it is cheaper and better tasting from the store. I have made ice cream and yogurt the simple and easy, to hard and complex and I use the finest ingredients I always say I am going back to store bought.

I would not suggest it Buy a Universal remote instead!!!

Well, if you are talking about the cost of making your own vs. store bought, maybe not. If you are talking taste then hell yeah. Homemade yogurt is much more tastier than store bought and there are different strains of yogurt culture that yield slightly different taste. I made some yogurt using L. Bulgaricus strain and my mother-in-law, who is Bulgarian, claimed it was just like that in her country.
