I was in the Army Security Agency, in the mid to late 1950's, and the early 1960's ! ( I have been told that the old A.S.A. no longer exists) I went to where it never existed, did what never happened, at a time that wasn't, and we supported ALL military activities, especially us on the ground !!!!! I am EXTREMLY PROUD TO HAVE TWO (2) HONORABLE DISCHARGES !!! Since I am well over the age of proficiency in hand to hand, have fought 8 tumors and had 1 heart attack, and 1 bout of massive blood hemorage, I, several years ago, acquired a Remington rifle, in .308 , equiped it with a good 4 X 16 scope, had it accurized to put 5 rounds into 5 inches @ 1000 yards, and keep "enough" rounds for my comfort!!! My question is : How many of us old vet's are ready to do what is necessary, to defend this / our country ??? I know 99.999 percent will, the question is , by count, how many??? 1, 2, 3 million?? Any one have an educated guess??

Thanks for the great answers ! And, yes, I am older, and not like I was 50 years ago, and that could also be used to an advantage. Knowing what I know today, IF I could go into active duty in Iraq, I would use the geological annomalies to wage a war, like that which has not been waged, as yet !!!!

Guess I have to use history as a guide. We fought a seven year war to gain independence from Great Britain. One third of the population supported that effort and many enlisted to fight. One third maintained allegiance with the British Crown with some of them emigrating to Canada, where their descendants belong to the United Empire Loyalists. The other third didn't care who won and were perfectly prepared to collaborate with the winner.
A quick count of the current anti-war crowd shows a sizeable contingent of them in NYC which was one of the target areas in the attack on America. So, as a 25 year Navy man who is armed and has the right to be so in my state of Nevada, I'm less than confident that a credible defense of the homeland will be born out of the ranks of the civilians. I would guess a muster of 500 thousand vets might be possible, assuming they don't live in areas where the government has disarmed them. I think there are two keys in helping out with defense of the homeland. One is kind of Navy oriented: If you see a "sloop" { (s)omething or (s)omeone (l)ooks (o)ut (o)f (p)lace} then get out your "oar"
{(o)bserve (a)nd (r)ecord or (o)bserve (a)nd (r)eport}. The other is a bit of humor designed to focus you on who is doing the job:
The military member goes to war and stands tall,
So the civilian can then go shopping at the mall.

Hey Lonnal W. "Long distance is the next best thing to being there." Obviously we have some young people on this site who have not realized that freedom isn't free. I'm retired military and now need to wear glasses to shoot, but I understand the principles of gun control. Sight picture, breath control and trigger squeeze. Just think about the countries and times when people surrendered their personal weapons and look what happened?

I think when we went in, we swore to "defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." You still have that obligation today. Keep the faith brother!

Uncle will, there are plenty of patriot groups out there. don't know the number, but its not small. Many are on police forces and in the military. They say if push comes to shove, they will fight to the death. They figure it is better than total slavery. We are now slaves to the bankers, but actual physical slavery would just be unacceptable.
I served twice and then it was different. Now I can't say I like it at all!

I can't give you an exact answer but I think our country boys would be our greatest asset. You also have to consider the amount of vets we do have in the counrty, although they may be past their prime, I'm sure most of them would gladly fight.

Bless you. Although I am a 'young' vet, ya damn right I would defend our homeland. I hope all other vets think the same way, and that would be my guess.
by the way...nice grouping!

Neither are you in a physical or emotional state to do what you did when you were twenty. It's better to teach what you know. I don't want my freedom depending on your medicare bill.

Defend from what?
I'm sorry that you're getting old and feeling useless and all, but don't you think you're taking the fantasy a little far?
