I am visiting a dermatologist for the first time next week, I want to ask him/her if I could go on accutane... do they only prescribe it if they think your acne is bad enough for it? I've tried several cremes and they havn't worked, ive had ongoing acne since I was 11 and I'm 19 now... am I going to have to convince the dermatologist that I want to go on it? I know all the side effects and what I would be getting myself into... I just hope he/she will prescribe me it when I go.

I've been on accutane once for 5 months and now im on it again for 3 months. if you've had acne for longer in your life then there is a possiblity or either a longer treatment or a "booster" after your first treatment to make it permanent. accutane has the following side effects that i've experienced: nosebleeds, flaky skin, dry skin and chapped lips. all you have to do is carry tissues with you all the time in case of a nosebleed because they can come and go. just use lots of moisturizer, get doctor-prescribed chapstick on at ALL times and you'll be good. the side effects aren't that bad at all. its a small price to pay for a life changing improvement. do it i promise you will never ever regret it.

They might want to try a few things first before putting you on Accutane. Accutane is usually only prescribed for people with severe acne or when other attempts to treat acne (creams, antibiotics, etc) have failed.

I went to a dermatologist when I was 16. I had tried EVERYTHING (so I thought). When I got to my dermatologist he suggested I try a few more things before he prescribed Accutane. One of those things include shots directly in my face (SO painful). After all of that he FINALLY prescribed me Accutane and it worked wonders!

Just go with what they think will work for you. If it doesn't just insist that you REALLY want to try Accutane and they'll probably give it to you.

I just went back to the doctor for acne problems (5 years after first being treated for it) and they tried to get me to use other medications and I told them no. I ONLY wanted Accutane because it worked so well the first time!

Good luck to you!

It depends on the derm that you see. Most will probably put you on it no problem. There are a number of things that you will have to do prior to going onto this drug but they will explain all of that to you at the time you are prescribed.

I have had raging acne for my entire adult life so far and now have it under 100% control without ever having used accutane. I was put onto minocycline once a day and use retin-a and triaz. I have severe acne, so it is wonderful what this combination of things has done for me. I do not have one zit on my face since starting this a year ago

I have a friend who went on it, a female so the side effects are a million times worse, but, I'm thinking the dermatologist will probably try a few things before prescribing you such a strong attack. And most insurance companies don't pay for it until everything else has been attempted.
