I am living in the United States and am wondering if it would be worth it for me to take a trip there in about 2 weeks (august 4th) I have heard conflicting ideas from different sources. I know as of now there are no preventitive measures or cures available. Is it still contagious? How high are my risks of catching various diseases if I do go? What are the effects of the disease? short term, and long term. Any information you can provide is helpful. Thanks!

Only you can decide whether or not to travel to Kerala.

As for chikungunya, it is not "catching" as you can only get it from an infected mosquito...it is not transferable from person to person.

Chikungunya is a rare viral infection transmitted by infected mosquitoes (usually in tropical areas). Being viral, there is no specific treatment...it has to run its course. Some things have been tried in the pastto treat it, such as chloroquine, but with very limited success. Best that can be done is to treat the symptoms: rest, NSAIDS (non-steroid anti-inflamatory drugs) such as ibuprofen for fever and joint pain, and mild exercise for stiffness. Sometimes, doctors will order paracetamol to combat the fever and joint pain.

The best thing to do is to take measures to avoid contracting it by doing all you can to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes:
wear clothing that covers as much of your body as possible
avoid areas of stagnant water
use mosquito repellent
use mosquito nets when sleeping

There are no long term effects and the short term are already given in the symptomology. There is also no way anyone can predict your "risks of catching" any disease.
