Once you have people betting on the outcome of the game, it is possible that some people will try to influence the results.

it creates a conflict of interest between gamblers, boosters and athletes. many scandals have erupted from the 1919 black sox to rampant game fixing in the early to mid 90s in college basketball.
and now it seems the mob has gotten to nba refs to influence point spreads.
