If it were, the thief on the cross would not have been saved.
People who are dying and too weak would not be saved.
However, it is an act of commitment and an outward showing of following Jesus. It is a testimony and we are told in the Bible to be baptized.

Babies are born of water, (this can be considered the "first baptism" of the body) but when the responsibility of knowledge comes, one needs to decide in what direction they want to go with that knowledge. This is where the "baptism of the spirit" (mind) comes in. When you decide to follow Jesus and become one in Spirit with Him, this is the first baptism of the Spirit. Only when one becomes Spiritually alive does the physical baptism for the Spiritual reason take place. (Because what is born of the flesh, is flesh and what is born of the spirit, is spirit). The second baptism of the body is what is commanded after the first baptism of the body and the first baptism of the Spirit have come together. I don't know if baptism is required for salvation, but I don't think that it necessarily is... If a person was born of Spirit and died the next hour, without having been baptized (for the spiritual reason) yet... God would know that it was the person's intention to be baptized, and though the person had not had a second, physical baptism, I do not believe that would keep the person out of heaven.

I think that baptism and salvation are tied so closely together that at times they are indistinguishable from each other in the Bible. This matches circumcision and becoming a Jew in the Old Testament. Baptism is the Christians mark of salvation, and who would not want to be marked for the Lord?

Depends on which Baptism you are talking about, The Baptism of the Holy Spirit or the Baptism into the Church. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit or the Baptism of Water is received the moment you except Jesus as your Savior. The Baptism in the water to baptize one into the Church is done to show others that you have excepted Jesus and are now one of His followers. These Baptism in no way gives Salvation. If you go into the water a lost sinner on your way to hell, you will come out a wet lost sinner on you way to hell.

Look at the Bible as a whole. There are scriptures that say you need to believe to be saved. While that's true, I've never seen a scripture that says that's ALL you need to do. The Bible says that if you do not confess Jesus before men, He will not confess you before His Father. While that's true, the scripture does not say that's ALL you have to do. See where I'm headed? Now about baptism, specifically, here's the pratical viewpoint. We cannot approach the throne with sin in our lives. The blood of Jesus is the ONLY thing that can cleanse us. We access the blood through baptism. Even without looking at all the scriptures Father K refers to, we can pretty easily figure it out.

Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
What does this scripture say? You must believe and be baptized.
If you have given your life to Jesus, accepted him into your heart, and repented of your sins. You are on your way to heaven. If you were to die or are killed, I don't feel that you are not saved if you haven't been baptized. Remember the theif hanging beside Jesus (Luke 23:42&32). If someone is on their death bed and repents and believes on the Lord Jesus Christ and dies and is not able to be baptized, I feel they are saved also. Because God judges the heart.
However if a healthy person has accepted Jesus they do need to follow through with baptism. Mark 16:16. We must obey the scriptures, they are the word of the Lord.
For not being obedient King Saul was rejected out of the Kingdom. WE MUST BE OBEDIENT. Would we want to take a chance of being rejected for not obeying. Our souls are to important. Being obedient brings many blessings in the Lord.
1 Samuel 15:22&23
22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

Saving faith is necessary for salvation. One aspect of saving faith is that it is application oriented. Thus, for example, one not only "calls" Jesus Lord, but treats him as Lord by doing what he says. One thing he has commanded is water baptism for believers.
So if you believe in Jesus what would hinder you from getting baptized?

Absolutely!
The church was begun on Pentacost some 50 days after Jesus died on the cross. The apostles were given the authority at that time to start up the one true church. By that time Jesus had already ascended to Heaven. Anything that happend before Pentacost was not part of the church.
(The part about the thief going to heaven with Jesus happened BEFORE the church was started. God can do whatever he wants, regardless. He is God, after all...)
At Pentacost, the five steps to salvation were outlined, and they remain in effect to this day.
You must HEAR the gospel
You must BELIEVE the gospel
You must CONFESS that Christ was the Son of God
You must REPENT of your sins
You must be BAPTIZED for the remission of sins
After that, you must live faithfully.

I am not a Christian, but i can read the bible and according to the bible it is. Mark 16;16, Acts 2;38, Romans 6:4,5,6 Colossians 2:12 1 Corinthians 12:13, 1 Peter 3:21.
Very few Christians understand this as they just take whatever their preacher says as truth.
the sinners prayer is a stable in most Christian beliefs and guess what they are putting their faith in something that is not in the bible.
I have run into a few Christians who believe the bible,. Search the site below,

Yes, we are commanded to be baptized, it is a public way ot saying you belong to God, and for more reasons we are to do this, It is necessary to be baptized. BUt in saying that, let me add this. There are times when one isnt that God still will save you. Like the thief on the cross. He was not baptized, as he just accepted the Lord, but God still says He would go to Heaven today The man died before he could be baptized, but it was in his heart.
So when one knows they are Gods , they need to get baptized right then, before its too late. ITs not something to put off WE are commanded to do this and we must do as God says to be saved, then He will bless us and protect us becasue He loves us so much. THe things we do dont save us, we are saved only by the blood of Jesus Christ. YEt God tells us to follow Jesus and follow His commands. The more we obey the Lord, the more we become like Him and His desires become our desires and we wont even want to sin. But, when God says to do, we must, and when He says not to do, we just dont . period. Hope I helped you some....
