if i give u 20 dollars to go to the store and you came back with 11 dollars and 25 cents....i wanna know how much did this person spend at the store?

Whether you gave me the $20 or gave it to someone else... and wheather we spent the money or put it in our pocket... you got $11.25 back. The difference is still only $8.75.
What's so hard about that?
