Just tell him the truth. If its gottin to the point of talking about marrige why has she been with him for so long? Just ask him to understand and if he really cared about her than he would respect her desicion and take it like a man.

I would tell him that you were going through a phase in your life. You were really doing harm to yourself and him. I don't know if he can ever forgive you, because he might believe the "Once a cheater, always a cheater>" phrase, but at least you told him that what you did was wrong. And who knows, maybe this will all blow over, and you guys can start fresh. Go out and get some coffee and show him you have changed. Tell him that you know what you did was absolutely wrong and that you shouldn;t have put him through all of this, and for that, you are very sincerely sorry, and that you love him, and that you want to give it one more shot. If it works. It works. If it doesn't , then its time to let go! Best of luck to you!

In situations like this honesty is the best policy.Tell your "friend"to sit her guy down , tell him how much she likes and respects him. But to add that she does not feel like been in a romantic relationship just now and she also does not want to mislead him.Hence, she thinks it is best for them to remain platonic friends. Ask her to acknowledge the disappointment and/or pain she might be causing him and to apologize for it.That is all she can do under the circumstances assuming that her motives are pure and her reason is the truth.

She should just say something like, "I'm not trying to hurt you, but I think I need a break. Don't get me wrong, you're a great guy, but I don't think that I'm ready for a boyfriend right now."

Your friend just needs to tell her boyfriend that its not the right time in her life to be focus on a relationship right now and she needs time to think things through.

Doesn't matter how nice she say it, it will hurt. I think she should just tell him she needs a break.

Better now than later. If she isn't serious than she really doesn't care for him sounds like she wants to hang on until something better comes along.

it won't offend him, come off as harsh, if she says something like "i want to put us on hold... i just want to think about me for a while..."
the relationship isnt going to work out well unless they are honest with each other anyway.
