where I work you will need proof of ownership of your house or if you rent they will call your landlord and clear it with them.

if you have your own carrier, bring that. bring vaccination records of any other animals you have.

what the best thing to do is to call them a head of time and ask them exactly what you will need to bring with you when you come.

It depends on where you are adopting the cat. Different agencies have different procedures for adoption. Usually you will just need one or two pieces of regular ID like a drivers license. Shelter staff are generally more than happy to explain the process to you, all you have to do is ask.
Some agencies (mostly govt run) will sell you a cat carrier and supplies like litter boxes, etc. but it's best to check in advance. If you are dealing with a small private organization like a non-profit rescue you will likely need to buy your supplies at a pet store. If you don't have what you need when you pick out a cat, most places will hang on to the cat for an extra day for you in order to pick up the needed supplies. Some agencies may do home visits. Either way, You will almost certainly have to fill in a detailed questionnaire as part of your screening as well as sign and adoption agreement.

Well first it depends on what state you live in. There maybe different rules/laws for each state. When I adopted my cat I didn't need to bring anything but the money to buy him. You may want to bring a carrier, where I went I spent 8 dollars on a cardboard carrier to take him home because I didn't bring one. Which wasn't a big deal the money went to food and medications for the humane society. Home visits? I'm not sure about this. You may want to go to the shelter and visit the cat you want to adopt a couple times and ask any questions you have to the workers. Good luck!

When I adopted my cat, I just needed my driver's license and the adoption fee ($40). Oh, and I think they asked about if I owned or rented and if my lease was pet-friendly. The people at the shelter were very nice and answered all my questions, so you could try calling ahead. Also, they gave me a cardboard carrier to bring Kitty home in for free... I actually used that to take her to her first vet visit until I was able to purchase one. Our SPCA does not do home visits, so I don't know about that part. But a nice thing to do when you go to the shelter would be to take some food or litter or cat toys to donate. We went back a few weeks after adopting Kitty and donated food, litter, Clorox wipes... some things off the shelter's website "wish list." The staff really appreciates it.

Every animal shelter is different in regards to the adoption process. When I lived in Maryland, they would do a home inspection, do a background check, and a credit check just to adopt a cat. In California (desert city) they let us take home a cat with a small ($10) adoption fee and nothing else. You should find the shelters in your area...or find them on the internet and ask them the procedure.

Thank you for adopting and saving a life.

Hi Tina. I've never heard of home visits from a counselor. What i suggest is a great site called http://www.thecatsite.com The people are total cat experts. Register and post. It's worth it and the people are nice. You'll need a carrier most definitely

Every animal shelter is different, so give them a call and ask what you need to show or bring if you want to adopt a cat from them.

The procedures all depend on where you are adopting the pet from. Ask them for their procedures. Yes, if you are adopting an animal, you should own your own pet carrier for this occassion and future travels to the vet, etc.

This has information on getting an animal from the Humane Society, but different organizations will have different procedures. Call your local shelter or adoption center and ask what you need to have ready before you bring home your kitty.

Go to
Petfinder.com
and look at kitties and orgainizations there. Many have websites and will tell you exactly what you need in order to adopt. Don't worry about home visits. They aren't looking for a perfect house, but rather a good enviornment for your new baby!
