I don't know of any way to control ones thoughts and concentrate other than by just willing yourself to do it. A good reason for not being able to concentrate on a subject is that you are simply not very interested in the subject; other thoughts which seem more important slip in and override your will to concentrate on that thing. There are techniques for improving thinking and will. Certain types of meditation are said to improve concentration but are passive and I don't think you would be interested in them as you probably want to concentrate actively on certain studies.

There used to be a free therapy group in most cities called Recovery Inc. It was founded in about 1950 by Dr. Abraham A. Low, a psychiatrist. He developed a self help system for recovering from mental disorders and wrote the book, "Mental Health Through Will Training"; Willet Publishing Co., Glencoe IL,60022, 1997. The book is still available from Amazon.com.

I don't know if these groups or the Company still functions but I mention it because it concentrates on improving ones will power to overcome all sorts of aberrations in thinking. That is what you need to do to improve your concentration and maybe control your thinking. Recovery Inc. used to be reachable at 802 N. Dearborn St., Chicago IL,60610 (312)-337-5661

Attain the seriousness of achieving your objective / goal first. Once this attained, then your thoughts too shall follow positively to get full concentration.
