Hes about a year and a half old. I dont really know whats up with him, he came in Wednesday night and wasnt moving or eating. My parents kept him warm but didnt think he'd make it through the night. He was better yesterday, we gave him tuna and fish baby food, and he even walked around the garden a few times. Now hes gone backwards. One side of his neck is swollen and very hard, and he dosent move his neck. He walks, and he does eat a little, but we've just given him pilchards which he retched up and dribbled before leaving. Hes a little wheezy but hes not in any pain. We've taken him to the vets but they've said hes too weak to be operated on and they dont really know whats wrong. Hes so weak. I cant let him die..i love him. Any advice on what i can do?

@ BSB: you should read the damn question before you start scolding the questioner. He did take the cat to the vet.

I woulnd't be satisfied with no diagnosis from the vet, I'd get the cat to a different vet.
What you describe sounds like an abscess. At the VERY LEAST the vet should have done a needle aspirate (put a needle in and seen what type of fluid it draws out). The cat IS in pain, no hard neck would be pain free, so get him to a different vet before you loose him.
If it is an abscess, there are different ways of dealing with it. Lancing, draining, operating, etc. They should be putting antibiotics into him to help get the swelling down. If your vet didn't even do that, he's not a reliable cat vet (some specialize in dogs, but if he did NOTHING then I would not trust an animal to that vet in the future).
Find a second vet and start asking him questions. Have him examine your pet asap.

If you already took him to the vet, then why didn't they keep him overnight for observation? Oh well, the best thing you can do for him is keep him comfortable. You can ask the vet for antibiotics, I guess. If his neck is all swolen, it's possible he got bit by a rattlesnake. I can't believe the vet had no idea what's wrong, that's absolute crap. Take him to another vet and don't take no for an answer. With cats, it's very hard to tell if they are in pain or not. Cats purr in pleasure AND when they are in pain. Tricky. Try mixing chicken broth into his food.
Dude, I'm sorry. You've got a crappy vet. Do what you can to make him comfortable. If he doesn't improve, then do the humane thing and put him down.

It sounds like an abscess that's too close to his throat. If it gets worse, he may have trouble breathing, too. He needs to be seen by a vet. Having him fixed won't stop him from enjoying the ladies, but it will stop him from fighting with the boys, the biggest cause of abscesses.

He has an abscess and any vet can lance it. I had that problem with my inside cat that got out, came back 3 day's later with the side of his head swelled like he had a golf ball under his skin. They drained it and started antibiotics. take him to your vet.

If the vets cant do anything you could try. Research it. And if you cant do anything to treat it and he has to pass away spend all of your spare time with him.
Goodluck I really hope he is ok i have a cat myself and i love him lots.

if the vets say there is nothing you can do and he is too weak, then there must not be anything you can do.
if you really wanted to to, take him to a different vet. and ssee what they say.
good luck.
