I was asking if you Americans (I'm Italian) would ever give up weapons and I had this answer from this user
<<(TexasJewBoy12)
My ancestors found out the hard way what happens when you let the government disarm you. When the police have all the guns, you have a police state! >>
I'm really interested in knowing how many other Americans have the same opinion!

thanks!

Well, Italy, you asked for it and you got it. The best of the worst.

Not only do we have the highest number of shooting victims in the "civilized world," we also have its most corrupt government. But thank God we've got our guns... In the meantime, you in Western European countries live in police states...

Too bad we can't spend our money on education rather than guns. Or even on travel so we could see the rest of the world is not one big police state.

What I don't understand, some of you Americans (I'm Canadian) say that you have the right to bear arms to keep the government from becoming a police state. The U.S. is the closest thing to a police state in the Western World. You're government uses warrantless wiretips to listen to your conversations, your email is screened for words like bomb, Allah or "Kill George Bush" and your government imprisons people, including American citizens, indefinately without legal counsel. My favorite recent revelation from the current US administration is that while you are opposed to torture, it's only the torture of American citizens on US soil. It's ok to torture any foreigner, anywhere, and if you want to torture an American just take him to another country, like Romania. If you have the right to bear arms specifically to prevent what is happening right now from happening, why aren't you doing anything about it?

It's a fact, not an opinion. I'm amazed that Europeans don't see this after Hitler & Mussolini. How many times are you going to be caught without guns when a dictator shows up at your door?
Do you think the world would be safe if Bush knew he had disarmed the rest of America?

You have to remember that the USA came into existence through a revolution. The founding fathers did not trust government and wanted people to be able to protect themselves against government abuses.

Well, there is a lot of guns in our country and most gun owners would rather not have the government intrude on their rights as citizens to keep weapons in a responsible manner.

The fact that there are some who are posting that they would use force to keep their guns....please note that they must be in the minority.

"The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." -- (Thomas Jefferson)

"Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence ... From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to insure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable . . . The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that is good" (George Washington)

First, I think Eorupeans need to get over this notion that every American walks around with a six shooter on his hip. The vast majority of Americans do not own guns. I beleieve the poster you quoted, who identified himself as a jew, was refering to the Holocaust perpertrated by the Nazis.
I personally believe the gov't does not have the ability to defend me if the sh*t ever really hit the fan. I like the fact that I can defend myself and my family against those who seek to do us harm.
The right of americans to own weapons is not a stand alone right. It is part of who we are and reflects out society as a whole. We have a society that does not believe in restricting the rights of the individual, even to do something we may not neccesarily agree with. 99.9% of American gun onwers are law abiding citizens who own their weapons legally. The ones who use weapons to commit crimes, coincidentaly usually have illegal guns in violation of the law anyway. As many euopean nations have found, banning guns has no effect on crime as criminals, by definition, do not follow laws anyway!

I'll never give up my gun. Like they say, "If guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns." Plus our right to bare arms protects out nation and our freedom. No tyrant could take over and run a dictatorship because the people could take the country back. Also no invading army could conquer us because of the millions of guns in the hands of the people.

They can't shoot me if I can shoot them first. There is a problem when your government expects you to misbehave. It invites 'preemptive' restrictions that ultimately interefere with the ability to take care of yourself.

The right to bear arms is an important check and balance on our government. A citizenry that can arm itself can never be forced to accept a corrupt government that runs their lives. Likewise, and individual has a right to protect his family and his property and his livelihood from harm. The police cannot be everywhere at the same moment, and if you outlaw guns, only the lawless criminals will have them. Do you really think a crook will obey the law that you may not own a gun?

I am sorry you live in Italy, where there is a lot of communist thinking. Your country is very small compared to ours and you are probably only exposed to your restricted method of government. In America, our government trusts us because we all are equally able to take advantage of the opportunities before us.

you have to undestand that the right to bear arms i something that was given to us as american,(by those who set us free) and we have to protect it, if we give up one, only one of our rights, what can assure us that they would not take the other ones we have. Also i am very suprice to read this question from an Italian citizen, i believe you have a similar right as us, you can also have guns, and the oldest gun maker in the world is Italian (Beretta Family) I love their guns, and also you guys are making millions with america, (us troops use Beretta guns M9's)
