Yes, it's sold by weight. But the bones can do double duty when put into a stock, so they're worth it. It's the boneless stuff that's more expensive because it's been processed.

Buy boneless if you don't want to pay for the bones, but cooking the chicken on the bone gives it more flavor and keeps it juicier.

If the bone wasn't there you'd have a real mess. Legs of lamb also contain a bone. You pay less for meat on the bone. Buy it filleted and it's more expensive.

Put the whole chicken in a crockpot all day and the bones will be as tender as the meat. They're not bad.
