Regular mattress should work just fine for a true platform bed.
No box spring is necessary, but make sure that the platform bed comes with European slats, or at least enough support for your mattress. Good luck!

I have a regular mattress w/o box spring on my platform and it works just fine. I don't think there is such a thing as a special one for platforms. Although a good quality, extra deep (thick) mattresses work best.

I have a piece of regular foam rubber wrapped in a flat sheet and then another sheet for bedding. Three inches I think. Very comfy. I like a HARD bed.

You can use a regular mattress, no problem!
