i know how most 'christian' people feel about harry potter. magic is evil, demonic, blah, blah, blah.
so, how do you feel? is it just fun movie? or is there controversy about whether or not they cast witches and such in a favorable light?

i know that not all christians feel this way. i said most, perhaps i was being overly pessimistic..... the ones i know seem to feel that harry potter is evil and bad (as well as any other 'magical' movie).
i also realize that it is fantasy and just a movie, i just wondered if there was any controversy surrounding this movie within the pagan circles as it seems to be in some christian ones.
thanks for all the answers everyone!!!

Considering that none of it is really about witchcraft, it's simply fantasy and all in good fun. I adore the Harry Potter books.. they are all about empowerment, dealing with life and searching within to find your strength.

I'm a Christian Witch, and I like Harry Potter. It's not at all like the magic practiced by pagans and such--fantasy magic is much louder and more sensational, whereas ritual magic involves deep calm and order. Harry potter is fun, and it gives wizardry a human face, whereas a lot of other fantasy books make witches look like psychos.
Harry potter and his friends are evidently Christian, as the school celebrates Christmas, not the Winter Solstice.
To the poster above: Wiccans don't harm animals. They value nature, and have a benevolent faith. They don't worship God--consciously anyway--but they act a lot more Godly than some Judeo-Christians.

It's a fiction series. I'm happy that kids are reading.
The magic in Harry Potter is nothing like the magic people practice. The magic in Harry Potter is just waving around a stick and muttering Latin. Magic people practice is more like prayer.

It's fiction. A movie focused on fictional people cannot cast real people in a positive or negative light. Comparing HP to modern witches is like worrying your pet lizard will eat the city after watching Godzilla. It just doesn't equate.
I would also argue your assumption about Christians. Fundemental Christians often think HP is demonic, but the average Christian does not. I know tons of Christians and the only one who is concerned at all with HP is a conservative Christian (and even he doesn't think its demonic.)

First of all, ITS JUST A MOVIE! I say let kids be kids and enjoy a fantasy life as long as they can, because the real world is, NOT SO FUN. It's not as though the kids are becoming pagans cause of a movie. And if we as adults want to relax and watch a movie, who the hell are they to say anything about it. It's not as though we're flying around on broomsticks or turning people into frogs:)
Those religious nut cases need to loosen up and enjoy life a little. Next thing you know, they'll be running around with torches in the night looking for the bogeyman:):):):)

I am Pagan, and to me, the Harry Potter books are just that--books. They're a great source of entertainment and fun, and that's it. They're not intended to advocate a magickal way of life.
To Christians, I say this: if your faith is so fragile that Harry Potter books can destroy it, perhaps you need to spend more time in church than on Yahoo! Answers. Tearing others down does not build you up.

It is all just fun. It does cast witches, etc., in a favorable light, but there are good and bad of everything. There is nothing wrong with Haryy Potter. And if it gets kids to read, that's better yet!

Personally, Andrew Vachs, James Ellroy, William Gibson and Neil Gaiman are all much more to my taste for light reading, and Scorcese and Luc Besson are more to my taste in films.
But as a reading teacher, I love seeing kids lugging around those big thick books! :-)
