Society is not based on religion although some society's are.
But we all assume you are asking what would American society be like without Christianity as it's foundation. For that answer look to the early part of this country before the Christians took over the government in the 1950's

You can't have one without the other societies create religion as a control and to answer the unanswerable questions we always have. Some people need the control and some can't live without knowing answers to questions we can't answer so we will always create religion. While some can live with reason alone without religion I don't think we've evolved enough for most of us to give up our security blankets.

We probably couldn't have a society without it... No other human civilization has been without one, just like no civilization has been without a government or a code of laws or a currency for that matter. It's an irreducible part of human experience.
The interesting question is, what would it be like if there was only one? (Pretty boring probably, but might be a lot happier)

Society needs religion. Religion is turned to when we ask the most important questions like: who are we?, where did we come from?, why are we here?, what came first the chicken or the egg?

Contrary to popular belief from most of the responses most wars were not fought for religious reasons. Most wars are just fought for land.
Religion is used by many to justify thier actions, if thier was no religion they would just do what they wanted for other reasons.

just like John Lennon's fantasy
except reality isn't a fantasy
but you have to understand that
all religion isn't bad, there is little
talk about the mystical sects of the
major religions here and they bring
personal enlightenment which is the
goal of life

well atimm said "peace on earth" but i disagree.
religion restricts us from doing lots of bad things like steal and lie, and without religion people really wouldn't care, and that would cause a much bigger problem than what different religions are causing today.
