One of the reason that people have pets is to control what animals come into the house and yard.

I would say you should call the emergency vet near you immediately. The thing about rat poison is that you need to treat it VERY early, or no matter what your poor little guy will not be able to get better. It's really nasty stuff. If you look in your phone book under vets, you should find your closest emergency vet. They are open all night, usually from 5pm to 9am, for cases just like this! They will be able to tell you if you should bring your pup in right away or if it is safe to wait until morning. With rat poison, I wouldn't take any chances. By the time you notice your little guy is sick, unfortunately, it might be too late. Good luck, and I hope everything turns out okay!!

Unless the rat is seriously wounded, it will probably survive. It might be in shock right now and unable to move, but that will wear off after a while. In the meantime, put the rat in the woods or under a clump of bushes where it won't be disturbed, or, if you're certain it's dying, you could take it to the vet to be euthanized. I don't think there's any way to keep your dog from bugging wild animals in the future--they are hunters by powerful instinct--but you could put a bell or something on the dog's collar so other animals can hear it coming and have a chance to get away.

1. Don't let the dog eat it. Rats carry diseases and sometimes rat poison.
2. If your question is what to do with the dog, it depends. If you want him to kill rats, say Good boy, but do take the rat away. If not, don't praise him, and take the rat away. Don't scold him, however, this is just instinct.
3. If you want to know what to do with the rat, if you are a real animal lover take it to the vet to see if it can be treated and then release it far from your home. If you are a medium animal lover take it to the vet to have it euthanised. If you are not an animal lover leave it alone.
Don't try to kill the rat yourself, you will tortyure it worse even if you want to put it out of its misery. You will really torture it for a long time, they don't die easily. Leave it alon eif you don't want to take it to a vet or a wildlife rescue centre.

Put the rat on the side of your yard where the dog can't get it.
If it is just stunned he will get up and away. If it is mortally wounded, there is nothing you can do (I am assuming it is a wild rat, not a pet).
My dog does this too. It's disturbing, but it's nature.

If you think the rat is dying then you need to put it out of its misery, unless it is a pet rat and you want to take it to the vet.
If its not a pet, take it outside and wap it with a shovel or something.
Then buy your puppy a toy for cryin out loud....
