Some ideas that I came up with are to stop subtly teaching children to judge others in churches (as I had described in http://www.sciforums.com/showthread.php?t=69355, before the militant atheist (Q) turned it into ANOTHER war), and to recognize that it is possible for there to be militant atheists (some of these people who disgrace atheism claim that they are innocent of oppression simply because they are not forcing any beliefs on others; they are doing just that, for they deny the existence of any religious deities, which means that they believe that there are no deities, which is what they are forcing on others), and also recognizing that there is both tolerance and intolerance in every religion. What are your ideas?

I'm saying that there are some people who happen to make atheism look terrible by being intolerant and then deny it ever happened.

No, I'm not saying it's bad to be an atheist, I'm saying it's bad to be a militant atheist. Just like it's bad to be a militant christian, or a militant jew, or a militant pagan, or a militant whatever.

OH... I get what you're saying... I should have put extra emphasis on the FORCING others to believe instead of the fact THAT they believe... stupid bad communication skills of mine...

Aren't you a bit intolerant of religious intolerance?

What a load. So the only way If I were an atheist to not be intolerant of others would be to stop being an atheist and become a theist. You sound a bit militant yourself that anyone not sharing your belief must be intolerant of you. Besides how is my having a different view on a subject forcing it on you or is your faith so weak that just knowing their are alternatives hurts you.

Just like how infants are intolerant to learn Christianity because of their parents who teach it to them at a very young age. Yeah nice try to claim that atheists force their beliefs on others, when everyone is born an atheist in the first place.

I think as a non believer there are militant people in religion as well. So with respect to your views on this matter i think you should take notice to some of the religious people on YA. I think you will find for every nasty Athiest there is just as many nasty Christians. As well for the nice ones on both sides. It takes 2 sides to have a war not 1. This is only my opinion and i respect yours.

"Resist not the world." Until related fields of science - psychology and physics primarily - prove that all the great religions teach the same fundamentals regarding the relationship between reality and the contents of consciousness, the problem of intolerance will continue to grow.

Every spiritual teacher has offered a different approach to the same problem of ending human suffering in this life, but each path degenerates over time into strategies for avoiding 'imagined' suffering after death.

Militant indicates military. There's no atheist military.
There are atheists who do the opposite of what they should. They claim to seek the truth but saying "There are no gods" is an unprovable statement. I can say there is no christian god and back it up. But just buy saying there are no gods they aren't forcing it on anyone. It is rather abrupt though. All statements are easier to take with reasoning. All of us give into being smart alecs sometimes (boy am I guilty of that) but we should try to respect those who respect us.

My idea is that you stop behaving like them and behave like Jesus instead. My idea is that you've become obsessed with convincing the unconvincable and have actually declared some sort of "war" on them ... what in the heck do you mean "militant" atheists? This is not how Jesus taught, this is not gospel, who the heck are you to tell Jesus that your way is better?

My idea is that you cease and desist this hatred, and try a little love instead ... and once in awhile, remember to turn the computer off and go outside.

2 choices:

1 - ban ALL religion.

2 - make intolerance a capital crime without appeal.

Since neither of these choices are viable, we must learn to live with it, and each other's small prejudices, etc. On the other hand, the Abrahamics are MORE intolerant of each other than of the rest of us, so we have a small reprieve right now. Especially if old Bennie keeps making pronouncements from on high that piss off everyone, including his own followers.

I'm Christian and basically agree. But I believe a better solution would be for us to teach our children that the bible is meant for them to judge their own hearts and not others. You know a mirror and not a club. As to the Atheist I have no idea how to make them tolerant of beliefs and differences in people as I'm not Atheist and since I'm not God I can't change their mind but one day maybe He will change some of their minds but it really isn't my job. Mine is to let the love of God shine through me.

Any religious manuscript that fosters feelings of superiority should be exposed for the hogwash they are. That would be a good start. Throw away the bible and there might be a whole lot more wonderful Christians in the world.
